Posting pictures

I apologize for being such a newbie, how can I post pictures on this site? Do we get any server space etc?

Not sure how it works here since I’ve never gotten any, but Geocities and Trainweb both host free sites…if you don’t mind all the advertising banners that show up…but there’s probably others around too…they’re just the ones I’m familiar with.

John, Check on the home page. What you are wanting is space in the "Freight Shed". I think the going gratuity is $20.00 American. All the space you want or need and you don't ever have to delete it to make room for more. Give Bob McCown an email and he will set you up. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of your screen on this page and you will see th "Contact Us", that will get the ball rolling. Best $20.00 bucks I've ever spent.

Thanks Ric!

Man I had fun at your Operating Session! Thank you for the invitation and expert advice you all gave. I never dreamt you could actually run trains with purpose like that. It was beyond just one’s imagination, I am already looking forward to next year. I only hope I have something battery powered by then.

Hey Larry, What’s with the GiantFile?

Even that size doesn’t improve that track, but it sure is BIG!!!

That freaker is huge! Should be thus:

Ore somewhere in between. John’s re-size looses all the detail, but a 640x480 photo usually gives good detail without creaming the dial-up guys.

Jon, absolutely right! Now all we need do is convince everyone that it can be done and how it’s done.

BTW you’d think with all the free software that comes with the digi-cams, and all kinds of other hardware, it be a 1-2-3 procedure to get things resized.
I also don’t get it why people would store mega-files on an ISP or other online depository, not any more than I get it why they would keep the original in JPEG format instead of TIFF or RAW. But that’s just miserable old fart HJ.

Well - my originals are all JPEG at the best resolution and least compression that my camera will do. My camera doesn't do RAW and until recently when 2GB cards became reasonably priced, the TIFF format was just way too big. I'm still saving as JPG but I'll give TIFF a try and see if I get better results with size changes & edits.

Jon,

The reason to do TIFF: you can save the file as often as you want while manipulating without loosing anything. With JPEG you save, you loose a bit; save often, loose quite a bit.

With pictures, I never use “save”…I use “save as”. That way I always have the original. My cheap-assed camera doesn’t have a choice of format to download in. It automatically saves to jpeg.

Warren,

Even if you download as JPEG you can save the original as TIFF once it’s on the 'puter. Still with that silly number that is the default.

Point is: a TIFF working copy doesn’t loose each time you save it.

But my originals only get saved once…that’s from the camera. Actually if I needed to save it in a different format it would be PSD for my photoshop. There are some versions of tiff that it doesn’t like.

Puzzled as to how to imbed a picture.

I can upload one to “My Files” and can see it if I mouse over it.
HOWEVER, it doesn’t seem to stick there, as when I close the “My Files” window the picture is gone the next time I go there.

What do I need to do to get the pictures to stick, or be imbeded?
Some code, like picture.jpg, or what?
OR,
do I need to host the picture elsewhere and link(would need the code for linking in that case)?

Thanks,
Don Howard
Hope to see you at American Invasion 2008

Don - I’m not sure why your photos aren’t sticking in the MyFiles section. They should. To post from MyFiles you simply click on the MyFiles link below the edit box, then click on the photo you wish to post. MyFiles will automatically insert the link in you post. The inserted link will look something like this

Thanks for the reply.
I am using Opera and do not have all features of Java and Javascript turned on.
Since the MyFiles is a pop up window, I sometimes get strange behavior.
I’ll try either a differnt version, or Firefox.

This site works very well with Firefox.

Jon and All,

I load all my pictures that I want to post in the LSC Freight Shed. I’ve always done this with good results. For some reason, I can’t get them to post in the Forums, any ideas? I believe I’ve used the format you described above, exactly. I’ve also tried the copy and paste format and it also does not work.

Truely stuck.

Yes - Go look at the last two posts in you Testing thread. The problem is spaces in the filenames that the My Files button can’t handle. If you open your freight shed as a directory at http://www.lscdata.com/users/rgolding You can see all the files. Click on any one to open it, then copy the URL from the top of the browser. This picture has the following URL

The %20 in the filename represents a space. When you look at the file list you don’t see the space because it is a link and teh browser underlines all links. Hope this helps
