Large Scale Central

Possibly worthless observation?

While trolling eBay I noticed that there was 313 pages of HO stuff for sale… Now that is a lot of toys… The prices tend to make a person cry a little as we in the goofy gauge are really paying for the privilege of having our stuff LARGER…

Now and then I tend to think about On30 as it is fairly reasonable and I could make a nice layout inside. I could use my outdoor tabletop layout too.

Hmmm Anyone care to buy all my goofy gauge stuff?? Might need to bring a truck and a small bag of hundred dollar bills !!!

Cheers,

On3 would work fine outdoors, although, I spent a lot of time agonizing over 1:32 and 1:29, and finally decided I wanted the trains larger. I would not personally go smaller.

As for feeling bad about HO prices, I looked at an Athern Genesis F unit. Seems to have all the nice details in a top of the line F unit in plastic. Retail price is $199, can get USAT F units all day new in the $175 range. Actually, my LS stuff costs about the same as quality HO.

So, I’m pleased.

Regards, Greg

p.s. what do you have for sale?

Greg

Other than what I put in the classified it’s just hit or miss weeding out stuff I no longer need.
Next item looking for a home, Accucraft 2 cylinder Shay electric version…

Now if you have a truck and that bag of $$$ — I’ll really go for the On30 …till then…

Oh ya, the majority of the stuff is Accucraft or Bachmann. Logging of course…

Cheers,

Is On3 track ok for outdoors ? Are there different types ?

Bryan, I'm not certain if you meant to write "0n3" or "0n30", but for 0n30 there are different types.

On30 runs on H0 SG track. To my knowledge, none of the most commonly used H0 tracks (Bachmann, Atlas, Kato) have UV resistant tie strips. They will disentegrate fairly rapidly in direct sunlight. I had a short length of Atlas H0 track outside for a couple of summers. It looked OK, but got to the point that the ties would fall apart with slight pressure.

Add the fact that the tie size and spacing of H0 scale SG track is way incorrect for 0n30 NG.

PECO (UK) track is made using UV stabilized tie strips and works very well outdoors. PECO’s “O-16.5 On30 Track” has ties that are sized and spaced closer to narrow gauge practice. The ties are ~6"x8"x5’. Unfortunately the tie plates and spikes have a very British look, but still better than using SG H0 track.

0n30 track is also made by Micro Engineering (US). I haven’t seen any information on ME’s UV resistance. ME ties appear to have a slightly smaller crossection then PECO’s, but they scale to ~6’ long. This is typical of US NG practice and they have a US NG appearance. ME doesn’t have completed turnouts yet, but supplies turnout rail kits that can be laid on the customer’s ties. 0n30 turnouts have been on ME’s ‘coming soon’ list for quite a while now.

Hope this helps.
