I don’t watch “reality” TV.
But caught this headline this morning. Two celebrities face up to 3 years in jail, for cooking a rat.
Animal cruelty

I think it’s time they charge the makers of veg-o-matic with cruelty to vegetables
The mob cooks rats all the time. Don’t see the bunny huggers bitchin about that!
How many hundreds of rats are killed in traps everyday in any average city in Oz yet this rat warrants charges? Absolutely unbelievable
Were these two legged ones or 4??? Regal
Okay, some rodents are dead and some idiots might get jail time. And what’s wrong with this. The rats are still dead and anyone that participates in those reality shows deserve what they get.
Say ! How about a Lobster dinner ? They take the plunge while still alive !

Before jumping to any conclusions, y’all might like to find out what sort of rat it was.
There are a number of native rat species in Australia. Although similar in appearance they are not the common brown rat we all abhor and are mostly found well away from human habitation.
All native species in Australia are protected by law.
In my experience rat is one of those animals that does NOT taste like chicken. I had to put a LOT of curry and custard powder with mine, as well as a good dollop of strawberry jelly and mustard before it tasted anything like good enough to eat, let alone share with my pals.
I’d say, if you have to eat rat, go for the fattest one you can catch - because not only will you not be able to catch the skinny ones, but if you actually did, they don’t taste anywhere near as good as a fat one.
Trust me on this one.

…Are we talking Tree Rats, here ? or rats bred for the dinner plate ?
The common sewer rat would not be my choice, but a Muskrat can be found enjoyable if caught in the late Fall. Tree Rats are best in a stew…Beaver, which is a form of Rodent, and thus considered a water rat in some circles, can be cooked and served in some societies. Guiny Pigs could also attrct some culture’s culinary tastes…all forms of rats…Tony I’m sure can fill us in on the rats from down there.
This thread is a step above “Outhouse tips” and “Farting Pleasures”, recently enjoyed on these pages. I commend the person who started the thread.
To add railroad content, I might add that some forms of rat have appeared in railroad history, so no-one is off the path of this great hobby…ENJOY
What I dont get is how is it animal cruelty. If they eat the rat it is no different then killing a deer and eating it. I can understand if it was endangered animal but it does not seem to be the case. Maybe it was not rat season yet LOL. Either way the most that will happen would be a small fine. The courts never go for the highest fines and jail time unless it was for something big. Killing and eating a rat is not a big offence. they are just pleasing the tree huggers. I see this stuff all the time although not rats.
Thanks Terry. I will keep your console and never ask you how you know this.
Hi Shawn.
Are you an expert on Australian native species or the procedures in Australian courts for the wanton killing of such species?
Never assume anything printed in the media is the truth.
That may have been a common sewer rat, but, if the contestants were not in an urban area it is highly likely it was a native rat species which are protected.
Given that Australians are the highest per capita polluters in the World and mankind in Australia has presided over the greatest number of native animal extinctions since settlement, thinking and caring Australians have said enough!!!
The penalties are tough and getting tougher.
3 years in jail? Didn’t they season it enough?
Fred you forgot Rug Rats too!! Hee Hee LOL Regal

"In a statement to The Associated Press, New South Wales state police said Sunday that two men, aged 33 and 30, were charged with animal cruelty "
Didn’t charge them with killing a “protected” species. Charged them with animal cruelty.
I thought it was funny. Still do
Ralph
And the woman (definitely NOT a ‘lady’) that fried and ate her ex’s pet goldfish awhile back ‘didn’t commit a crime’… people are screwy. The way laws are unequally (or generally not) enforced is even screwier.
They killed and ate a rat, on tv. Give 'em a medal (for stupidity?), and a couple Rolaids… 3 years?.. Somewhere there is a chart on how many offspring one pregnant rat could theoretically have in that period of time. Make the animal welfare people eat THAT many for wasting the court’s time.

“Indefinately” NOT A LADY…either the word is wrong, or there has been a change of meaning…learning minds are looking for guidance…!!!
