Port Orford and it's railroad

Hi all,

The forest fire smoke here in Southern Oregon has been horrible for the past 3 weeks, 5 straight days of “hazardous” air quality last week. So last Thursday wife and I loaded up the trailer and dogs and headed for the coast to get out of it. Had to come back home this morning but we spent several great smoke free days enjoying the beaches and camp grounds.

We also spent a couple afternoons with Dick and Helen Smith of the Port Orford Coast Railroad, enjoying lunches, conversation, and friendship. Dick and Helen are doing very well and still have the railroad running although not as much as in the past. Dick doesn’t visit the forums much anymore but does stay in touch with a few by email. He wanted me to pass on a “HI” to all his old friends on here and say that he misses the conversations from back when.

Dick & Helen Sept 2017

Hi Dick

Hard tell which is worse our fires and smoke or the storms in the south.

Hi Richard…

Great to see you and Helen are doing well. I miss your “Build Logs” of your beautiful railroad! Stay well :).

I hope you got to run a train or 2 with Dick. Great guy, great Railroad…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Good to see Richard and Helen… The railroad is great and Helen makes the best lemon bars for dessert… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

So what ever happen to Richard and his layout? Haven’t seen anything in a while.

I’d say “Hi Dick” like everyone else did, but since Dick does not get on the forums, I guess he would not see this.

And I guess in answer to Don, Rick said they are not running the railroad as much. Age gets us all eventually I guess.

Anyway, Rick, thanks for posting, give Dick & Helen our best from LSC, and did you manage to get any new pictures of the railroad?

Greg

Give them my regards!

Hi Richard and Helen,

Glad to see you’re both OK. I was thinking about you the other day, ‘cause I was going to ask you about what spray paint you used on your locos. But since we’re talkin’ serious issues here, I won’t ask you–what spray paint you used on you locos-- and just wish you both to have a nice day and stay well. Wonderful to hear they have survived this interesting fire season, unscathed. In our travels, we wanted to visit them, the Goodsons, and other northern west coast forum friends, but the smoke, time, obligations and future plans have prevented us from doing all we want to do. Once again, the “Clone Thing” and “Time Travel” really has its benefits.

Due to local family concerns I didn’t get down to PO this year, and missed out on the three most important reasons for going -

  1. To see Dick and his lady.

  2. To feed my face at Crazies, and

  3. To pay my respects to the traffic light that guards the entire 101 from down there up to there.

Next year WILL be different, as I really need to get my fill of all three.

Best to all here,

tac, ig, ken the GFT and the Boat-lift Dock boys

I miss seeing that railroad! Glad to hear they are both well.

Thanks for the update Rick! I have been wondering about them ever since I climbed out of the cave I was in for the last however many years. Like the others, I miss his posts and I miss chatting with him too!

Steve

Nice to see a newer photo of them… We use to work together for the same Company ( DiSalvo ) years ago and we talk quite often by e-mail. He and Helen are neat poeple and ya… we are same age…No photos here. lol.
