Poll: What's your build style?

Seriously, how do you approach your projects?

  1. I’m methodical and meticulous, from start to finish - no matter how long it takes
  2. I build in spurts, then quit for a while
  3. When the muse bites I’ll drop whatever else I’m working on for the new project, complete it, then go back to the old one.
  4. I like the challenge of working on several projects at once. That way I can do something on one while waiting for paint, glue or parts for another.
  5. I’m all thumbs, just do it for me and send me the bill already
  6. I never finish anythi…

I sorta vacillate between #3 and #4 with occasional mis-adventures that fall under #6. At the moment I have 3 buildings, an oil well, 4 steam locomotives, a railtruck, 2 boxcars, 7 hoppers, a tank car and a work flat (and a partridge in a pear treeeeeeee) on my plate…

Hi everyone; My name is Cale and I’m a 6.

I hope to change that in a few weeks…

Edit:

Actually, I’ve become almost complacent knowing I have a ton of stuff stored up in the barn. I’m one of those “Big dreams in a Small town” kinda guy. Invested thousands of dollars into this “hobby” over the last 5 years, began and tore down 2 layouts, converted some locos to battery and there it all sits-In My Way!..Many days I consider selling it all, though I don’t think I could stand the pain of losing what little rear-end I have  . I do enjoy the company here on LSC, and really it’s the main thing that keeps me in the train loop. I explained the other day to a friend who is a Freakin’ Train Wiki himself, that unlike most/many in the hobby,I’m not a “Train-aholic” I don’t even know what most moving parts do on a steam loco much less what they are called. I simply like the “idea” of having a train run around a little trackage out there in the yard, entertaining myself and my kids…there you go, I said it, that makes me Free!

cale-still a 6

Hi Cale!

Hmm, lets see. I think I’m somewhere between 1 and 2, depending on the project and how long its taking.

I think a lot of my 6s are because of my 3s.

Later,

K

I would say a 5 and 2. The 2 is because of LSC challenges.

  • I do very little planning when it comes to my projects. Im the type that when an idea hits me I have to start building it. Once I start I have to finish it. I cant sit still until its done.
-Im not one for using plans and measuring everything to scale. I use what I call the eyeball scale. If it look about right then its good enough for me. Thats what I love about logging RR. Nothing was built perfect.
  • I also like to use what I have around or recycle. Thats why I use a lot of wood, metal cans etc…
  • I also try to make what I can from scratch. If I can figure a way to build it cheaper then if bought I go that route.
  • I also hate anything new. I have to have eveything weathered.
  • Im also like Cal in that I have no idea about the mechanics of steam engines etc… just build to what I see.

What was the question, again?

2 and 3
With all your fingers stuck together with super glue, it’s hard to be meticulous.

My Building Style?

I usually have many projects going at once.
Sometimes the weather may not be suitable for painting, so I’ll move to another project until the weather gets better.
Or a project may become tedious. I’ll do something else for a while.
So I guess I’m sorta a 4, except it has nothing to do with me enjoying the challenge.
Ralph

I sort of fit 2 and 4. Like Ralph it’s not about the challenge, but more about moving away from something to let it dry. Less finger prints that way.

Probably an even mix of 2 and 3 with an occasional dash of 4.

I have reviewed all 6 numerous times and really can’t comply with any of the 6 listed? So I guess I really don’t know? I agree with Shawn on a lot of aspects he stated but maybe there should be #7 pull something outta your hind end and make it work? Or maybe I’m left out again??
Always the brides maid never the bride…:frowning:

If there was to be a #7 it would have been “I’ve got lots of great ideas, and I’ll get started on one just as soon as I finish my application for the procrastinator’s society - Which I haven’t yet sent for.” But can you really call that a “build style”?

That doesn't answer my question Alan?

I haven't got around to your question ;)

OK, just for rooster, #8 I haven’t a clue, but if you’ll hum a few bars I can fake it.

Well I lean mostly toward 7, but I’ve started a number of things and actually finished at least two, so a 6 then.

I’m mostly a 2 and 3, whenever I get a chance I go at it like mad but end up sidetracked onto three or four other projects till I make full circle back to the original project. So I guess I’m part 4 then too.

My building style? When all one has is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Definitely a 2&6 because of 4
