Pleasure boating traffic impedes CP Rail traffic

There is always something to be learned - yesterday it was later in the day. On my way back from my day trip on the Mountain Sub, shooting video, doing sketches and taking measurements, I noted a marked increase in Eastbound trains going up the hill in close succession. West of Revelstoke I noticed the same going towards Kamloops. This will be a field day! Four Westbounds in more or less stand-by positions to move, with still more trains going East.

Then I got to the swing bridge in Sicamous, aha OPEN.
Lots of traffic on Shuswap lake - this is Canada’s houseboat nirvana - the water level being higher than I’ve ever seen it before etc. etc. But I figured the bridge would be ready for the trains in no time - if only I had known.
Ten minutes later the message on the scanner that the bridge was still open and it would be another ten minutes before the train would roll. I could have been at the bridge, filmed the boats and recorded the scanner traffic as the boats cam through. Live and Learn!

Anyway, the dispatcher was not amused and reminded the engineer to put the reason for the delay in his report. Well I guess all those boaters had to get to shore and hit the bars for Happy Hour between 5 and 7. It was less than Happy Hour for the CP.

Aha… I’m a boater too. It works both ways. Here they won’t open the bridge if a train is due within 15 minutes. I spend a lot on that boat supporting the economy too
