Please help that poor suffering soul on the dark side

There is someone on the MLS who seems to have a problem with lighting his C&S Mogul. Unfortunately, he is getting plain rubbish as advice and will likely get some more…

There is nothing wrong with this engine and no need to rebuild it. Most likely the following will solve the lighting problems: 1) cleaning the gas jet and if the jet gets blocked again possibly the gas tanks and the interconnecting pipes need cleaning. 2) when lighting, fully open the “hot” tank on the engine and control the gas flow with the valve on the “cold” tank in the tender. The valve is very sensitive so open it very very little to start with. Finally, if the fire does not want to flash back blow gently at the stack. My account on the MLS has long been removed by the censors or the administrator but some of you may still have an account on the MLS, so please send this person a PM to look here or contact me directly, I have two of these Moguls, both running perfectly and lighting without any problems or modifications, and I operated Moguls owned and built by others. Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

I think anyone can post on MLS, it’s free, if you pay you can post pix/etc. Drop a line to Shad if you have a problem or Dwight can help you out. Be nice to have your expertise over there also.

Jerry - I do believe that Zubi means he is one of the Banished Ones. I’m suprised you aren’t a member of that club at the Aristo site

Heh guy’s I emailed the guy over on the other site!!! Last nite, and told Zubi I had done so, now it’s up to him to come to the other side and catch the LIGHT!!! The Regal

Yeah Jon, I figured I’d be toast by now over on the Aristo site. Never had heard of MLS banning folk though. Get a kick out of this site!

Many thanks to Terry, Jerry the Regal, and everyone who helped! Henry contacted me and together we will get his Mogul to run like a watch (a Swiss one that is). Today, I picked one of my Moguls after two or three years storage and I lit it up several times with no problem. It run like a watch for some 45 minutes “on the blocks”. I filmed the entire procedure for Henry. If I have some more time I will do the same with my other, golden Mogul, but today I am too busy playing with my new Orient Express by KATO…;-))) Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

I have just finished uploading the video for Henry. Everyone interested is welcome to view it too. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2691476644038369883
I hope this video will help dispel all the rubbish that has been written about this engine - the C&S Mogul by Aster. In the video I light up and run the engine which has not been run for two to three years. Every move is captured by the video. I had to tighten up the glass sight viewer of the gas tank as there seemed to be some gas leak after such an extensively long period of non-running. The engine was not prepared for long storage, I just put it on the floor after the last run and picked it up now - two to three years later… I did not refill the oil, so the engine is running on whatever oil is left in the lubricator. Also, my gas lighter is not reliable anymore, I have to strike it many times before it produces a flame. In the video I purposefully closed the gas valve a couple of times in order to demonstrate re-lighting of the engine in case the flame goes out (rare but possible due to wind for example). I demonstrate re-lighting through the stack and through the smokebox door. Please note that lighting through the stack is more difficult on my engine because I added extra insulation to the smokebox and boiler and I also installed a deflector on the stack which prevents oil from being expelled onto the smokebox and directing it down the beartrap. I hope those of you who have a C&S Mogul will enjoy the video. If you have any questions please ask. Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi PS the engine run in total about 45 minutes at pressures lower than observable, some steam can be seen escaping through a leaking safety valve in the cab - this is directed with a pipe under the engine’s left running board. Even with a leaking safety valve the engine has plenty of steam to run and run powerfully too! It runs almost as good as my Roundhouse 0-4-0 and better than my Roundhouse 2-6-2! I am sure that this says it all to anyone familiar with live steam.

Zubi,
excellent video presentation, with one minor suggestion. A voice over explaining your actions would benefit both the novice and experienced livesteamer. Truly rewarding viewing.

Tim, thank you! Well, the beginnings of cinematography were silent;-)) but of course you are right. My only excuse is that I intended this video to be a document rather than an instructor video. In other words, this is an entirely unedited, non-arranged and original account of running this engine again a pretty long break. Because it is quiet, you can even hear the gas leaking before I tighten up the sight glass! But what is more important, you can hear the gas flow whenever I open the tender gas valve, and you can also hear the burner sound whenever it is on, and you can hear when I adjust it. Of course I can make another video with explanations, perhaps I will do that with my other Mogul when time permits (and when I get a better lighter;-)) Thanks again and best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Why not take your video and use "Windows Movie Maker" and add the information via microphone then post the new video? It is easy to use the WMM software and its free.

BTW: I liked your video.

You don’t even need to pay to post photos. Just put them in your freight shed and link to them in img tags.

Good video Zubi, I would really like to have at least one Live Steamer, but looks to me like a whole lot of tinkering around with before you actually run, and as crippled up as I am until I get track raised up to where I can fiddle around standing up, it’s probably out of the question for me. But it still looks like fun, and for those who do like to tinker around alot of enjoyment!!! The Regal

Nice video Zubi, but I’m concerned with your use of water from a tea pot and not filling the lubricator before the run. Not advice I would pass on to other live steamers.

Jon, Thanks, but no need to be concerned. In Japan water is very soft, so everyone uses tap water. Using boiled water is actually an overkill... but the kettle is handy so I took it in this case, normally I use tap water just like everyone else, including everyone at Aster! Lubricator needs filling from time to time, but for this Mogul I use extremely thick oil, as it has a dead-leg lubricator and like every Aster the cylinders have Rulon self-lubricating piston rings. So they can run with practically no oil. I refill once in several runs. The locomotive would not run like it did with no visible pressure if it starved for lubrication. But I agree that other makes such as Accucraft or Roundhouse need freequent oil refil otherwise they cannot run. Once again, I did not intend this video to be a general advice or instruction video but a proof of lighting up and running the locomotive which some misinformed people suggest is impossible or difficult to light up, is not controllable, etc, etc. Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Zubi,

Thanks for the great video. I learned a lot. What a nice little loco! Thanks again.

Zubi - there’s yet another lost soul on the ‘other’ forum, and a friend of ours, Andre [lckdvl], might just be going to lay his paws on one…they DO seem to be popping out of the wrkwood!!

Terry, thanks for the note! Yes, Andre’ contacted me directly. The C&S Moguls are going to appear from time to time on the second hand market just as any other Aster locomotive. After all, there were a few hundreds of them made, and it was already almost twenty years ago. Plus, a few are still in Yokohama, partly due to the undeserved bad publicity they received soon after they were released. The great advantage of this locomotive is the fact that they are in 1:22.5 and very close to the LGB Mogul in size, so anyone willing to expand their 1:22.5 stable over a great US outline steamer may potentially be interested in one of these. They are both small enough to be easily transported and very powerful for their size. I just wish they had a few more details and prototype accuracy but considering that they were designed twenty years ago, they are just great. Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Okay, that poor suffering soul is now on this forum as well as the other one, though under slightly different usernames.
I picked the C & S Mogul partly because of its small minimum turn radius - my back garden is only 16 feet (4.85 metres) wall to wall, and after dodging the existing hardscaping and trees the minimum track radius is about 5 feet 11 inches (1.8 metres).
As I have explained to Zubi, the next test of the Mogul waits on the weather - I am in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, and the current weather is about average for the time of year - maximum temperatures in the low 40s F, 6 or 7 C, with occasional light snow.

Henry, I see your in the Philly area. Another source of info on live steam would be the Pa Live Steamers in Collegeville, Pa
