Plastic gears revisited

It’s been quite a while since I was on the forum or done anything with my trains for that matter. Anyway, I’m back and I’m going to tackle the dreaded “split plastic gear” problem during this winter. I have (2) Outside Frame 2-8-0’s and (3) 4-6-0 Annies (not sure which generation but they have metal side rods). Now the question: where can I get replacement METAL gears for these engines and is that considered the ultimate fix? Also, I’d really appreciate any help finding websites that address this gear problem, like I said, it’s been quite a while since I’ve thought about any of this stuff.

Thanks,

Walt

Bachmann did have a brass gear c/w axle available for the Connie or try NWSL for gears for both. And Daktah Jon I believe has the directions on his web-site.

He will chime in when he sees this.

Connie Drive Gear

These gears do not have shoulders like the plastic ones do. So I had to add 0.010" washer on each side. The washers I used are the Aristo-Craft axle washers (ART 29351-19) in the new motor blocks for the FA-1, RS-3, U25-B, etc.

Paul, there are two small brass rings, one on either side of the gear in the box. Make sure to replace them on the new gear, they are required spacers.

That’s good to hear that Bachmann has added the rings to the package, as the Aristo-Craft washers would be hard to find.

The gears I received years ago did not have the rings. But the Connies I did with the washers are running fine.

I guess my ears were ringing for a reason. This page was put together by our late friend Mik. I grabbed a copy of his site soon after he passed and made just this page available publicly, but only if you have the link: http://www.cvsry.com/MIK/Ashpit/gear.html
