Plastic Display Rail and Ties

One of our distant club members, Martin Belokin of Denton, Texas brought his new product “Plastic Display Track” to the Gateway Garden Railroad Winter Meet. He had lots of examples of the rail and track. It came in many colors and during a clinic he showed and demonstrated how it could be used. Of course, many people were trying to see if it could be used for operations, but I was more than happy to test it out for its intended purpose of display track. By using it, I could free up more than 25 feet of brass rail and ties that I know can be used for future expansion and operations. This is the track I wanted to replace.

The rail came in 18 foot lengths and the ties came in a box.

I was informed that the rails could be a little tough getting on the ties, but by laying it out on a slick concrete floor, it all slid together real easy.

Its all held in place by #8 counter sunk head machine screws, that are on the inside of the track. Please excuse the dark picture. However, you can see how the screws are offset and there are 2 screw holes side by side to hold rail together without rail joiners.

I’m very pleased with the color and using it for its intended purposes. The ties are very modern with a concrete tie shape, but you can’t see that on the display shelf. The product is being marketed by Train-LI. This product works for me.

that is very neet. I could use some of that. Did he give a price ideal?

Geoff go to Train Li and check it out. Has been discussed to death on another forum! But then you would have to go to battery rc if you wanted to use it to run a train!! other than just display! Hah LOL Regal

That looks nice. The 18 foot rail length wakes it difficult to ship by anything other than motor-freight.

It's plastic, Jon. They roll it up. They can ship you a 50 foot roll easily. Ralph

OK. I didn't expect it to be that flexible.

In my converstions with Martin, it is moulded, not extruded. The mould is 18 foot long, so there is no 50 foot rolls. It is 18 foot long or shorter. It will can be rolled into about a circle of about 2 ft daimeter.

I asked Jan to hold this and then took the picture. Jon, Jan says you owe her. Sorry.

Hay Jerry Display use is the point. After all that is what is in the topic name.

Thanks Jan

I was able to totally get this project finished, yesterday. This new puppy stuff is time consuming. Just a few more observations - The hardest part of this whole project was finding the screws to fasten the ties to the track. They are #8 machine screws with a countersunk head and about 3/8’s of an inch long. I was able to find some in town that were brass, but not enough for the whole project. I found if attaching the track to a shelf, I could use 1 inch # 6 counter sunk wood screws. The #6’s also had the countersunk heads. I also tried #8 1/2 inch counter sunk head self tapping screws and though the point stuck out a little on the bottom, that sunk into the roadbed I use. Martin warned about the rail being stiff going into other ties, like Aristo or LGB. I was about 6 ties short of completing the entire project and had some standard gauge Aristo ties. I slid these on between the last Martin tie and two ties I had left over from the lower shelf, that held them in place. I can assure you, the rai lis tight going on Aristo ties. The picture is close when taking it while being confined by the ceiling, but I believe you can see the profile. So the first two ties are Martin’s, the next six are Aristo’s and then the rest are Martin’s.

From the side, the look is very close and from the top acceptable. Not that many people will have there head within a foot of our basement ceilling looking at the track.

I figure with today’s prices I saved about $70.00 with using this track for my display shelves and hope to also have an example of the track at the ECLSTS.

I bought some of this track to replace some of my SS track that I used in my 5 track covered storage area. I figured the last 10 ft of the 24 ft building did not need powered track so now I can recoup 50 ft of track. Yep even the 5 ft lengths of rail can be bent into a circle very flexible. Later RJD

Looks good Ric. Should work as intended, indoors and no running.

I do believe Axel and Dan will be @ the ECLSTS. ( Trail-Lie)
So you can hold and fo*******************
Ya , you can even bye some.

$AVING$ like this are very nice.

To give a different look to the plastic track, below are some shots of the gray colored ties with the rails…

And my use for some of the track.

The gondola holds paper towels for people to dry their hands…

In the masterbath, we have 2 gondola’s and a flatcar holding different types of toiletries for everyday usage… The 2X4’s that hold the gondola’s will be replaced with a trestle…

Mr Bible, we need a thread on your railroad and how it’s doing. And I wouldn’t plan on using this for more than storage or display.
