Had fun yesterday at North Platte , Ne Train Fest. Much bigger event than I expected, bus tours to the Bailey Yard, the Spike Tower(overlooks the yard), Buffalo BIll’s RAnch/museum, art show at the mall. Cody Park was where it all started, they have the Challenger on display there as well as one of the big DD’s and some cars. There were vendors/booths there also and the UP miniature train. Must have been thousands and it was the first day!
The yard is 2x8 miles, has over 330 miles of track.
They have two humps, one for east, one for west. They weigh the car, read the computer data off the side plate and can regulate the speed as it goes down the hump so it gets to the right train.
