Large Scale Central

Pittsburgh PA

Hey gang. I’m headed to Pittsburgh in a tiny bit to check out a pretty respectable hackerspace. Once I’m done there, is there anything to see or check out while I’m in town before i head back to Altoona?

I’ll take my tablet along to check the site and email while I’m in town.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There is the incline, the Heinz History Museum in the Strip District, I believe its on Smallman Street. If you want to do a bit more traveling, there is the trolley museum in Washington PA (Arden). There is the Conway rail-yard on Rt 65 west of the city. And you could ride a Duck (DKW) down at Station Square.

There is a lot to do around here, and I haven’t done as much as I want to.

guess I should have been more specific, thats my fault. I was specifically thinking about stuff in the garden railway genre

Ok, Phipps Conservatory used to have a large scale train set up, but from what I have heard, they haven’t been maintaining it well.

Or were you planning on invading someone’s home? I must warn you, my 11 pound dog is a fierce licker.

When will you be in town?Maybe you can stop by to see my layout

Sorry to be so late to the party.

Jason, You’d have been more than welcome to stop by our place but I was out by you at the EBT all weekend. Hope the hackerspace was worth the trip!

The Carnegie Science Center has an incredible detailed indoor model train exhibit if you’ve never been. I’d also recommend the Western Pennsylvania Railroad Museum but I believe it’s closed this time of year. As far as strictly garden railroading, I’m unaware of any public garden railroad worthy of your time and energy in the greater Pittsburgh area. You could always site see; check out the P&LE station or the old Pennsylvania station, they’re incredible architecture if that’s something that interest you.

The Carnegie baseball field and the Frank Lloyd Wright house are spectacular I think. I will have to say though that it’s tough to compete with the layout at the Chicago natural history museum. I must have take 200 pictures there a couple of Septembers ago.
