Large Scale Central

Piney Creek & Goat Hill Junction Railroad

Goats are great, skinned and roasting over a fire pit…

I could make a really baaaaaaad comment, but I won’t.

Some more work was done on the mountain, adding some rocks and a little planting. But I guess it wasn’t enough. A neighborhood cat has decided to make it its own scratching post and litter box. I get home from work each day and have to clean up the mess it made. I tried some of the usual remedies like spreading more small rocks and ground pepper, but I think it just does it for spite. There are plenty other places it could go, but it just has to go and destroy my hard work. I think I need to find some good ground cover to fill in some of the bare spots. Any ideas fellas?

Rick, railroad looks great… We’re in illinois, and a lot of our ground cover is Thyme… (Not the lemon Thyme, it grows too wild)… Wooley, Creeping, Minus, etc, etc…

Thanks Andy. Well I think it is thyme then. I just have to find a nursery in SoCal that carries those varieties. The lemon abounds where I have looked lately.

Lemon thyme gets 4-6 inches high, and spreads rapidly and everywhere… I refuse to use it… Wife is trying out some different types of ground cover, but I have no idea what it is…

I just came from a tiny nursery (M&M Nursery) near my office in Orange and they had a number of Thyme varietals including the ones you mentioned Andy, which I picked up. I also picked up a flat of White Star Creeper to try. I hope they will do well in my yard.

Rick, good luck…

Are there any home remedies or commercial products out there that are known to deter cats or other animals? I’ve heard of using cocoa mulch but I don’t think it looks that great on a railroad.

I’d suggest Propylene Glycol, but then the ASPCA would be on my case, so I won’t

I too was thinking something nasty, but alas, I work with a bunch of cat lovers. Rock and a hard place…

Rocks are natural…

The cat just pushes the rocks aside.

Well if you place the rocks in a slingshot…

Ahh! A motion sensing slingshot…

a pellet gun??? rubber bullets… too many dead cats in one pile will attract attention…

I’ll keep our cat home!
I don’t think he’s left any surprises and he hasn’t started ridin’ the rails – yet!

May I recommend this book...I have one in my library and highly recommend it! Glad too see it's still available! http://www.amazon.com/101-Uses-Dead-Simon-Bond/dp/0517545160

good book son…

I got a good laugh from one of the reviews…“This is so sick and disgusting that not even a die-hard fan of dark humor would give this another look”

I bet Victor has a copy
To be fair…most of the reviews are great
