Large Scale Central

Piko Christmas Set

Trainworld asked me to participate in a survey: I am very uninterested in this item:

It depends, is it free?

Seriously, the engines not too bad once you strip the paint off the drivers :frowning: , scale-wise its very chunky can easily pass for 1/22.5 (measure the door height :open_mouth: ). decals can be stripped, cars repainted, and its got an MDC DRGW caboose.

My only caviet is the price, (not just this but everywhere), its whats seriously driving me away from any future purchases.

So what’s the price? I gave up on looking at Trainworld ads year’s ago. MDC stuff does not have enough detail on it for me.

you could choose price one found reasonable!

think lowest price shown was $325 and it went up from there…or you could enter in a box what you thought was a fair price, I went with a sub-$200 offer.

I offered that I believed the product to be overpriced and undersold…I like the look, but as with Victor, I’m not ready to lay out the dough!

I’d go $75-80 for the loco, they can keep the cars…

Sort of agree. But amazing what a little paint will do

Matt,

Is that the same MDC caboose? If it is, you’ve done wonderful work.

Definitely not $323 material most likely in the neighborhood of around $179-$199 possibly! I wouldn’t be interested at all though. Maybe for children, or Mr. Rodgers neighborhood possibly hah lol The Regal
Like Matt said price was right you could part out and bash something to make it look half way decent!!

Thanks, and yes it is an MDC caboose. It came decorated as one of the older bright red D&RGW versions. I hated the bright red paint and decided to repaint and letter it to look more like the prototypes. Added marker lights too.

This MDC caboose repaint was part of a larger caboose rehabilitation program I did for the layout. More can be read here:

I tyoo would say that is one ugly train set before you painted and detailed it! Personally, Piko needs to look at the world economy before they put an inflated price on an item. You can buy a lot more for a lot lrss.

I would not spend much more then 150 for that set. Personally I never liked that style engine so I would be intrested in it anyway. For that price they need to give you more cars.

The last time this particular Christmas train came up for discussion, I used the phrase “Butt Ugly”.
I think that phrase still applies.
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
At a sub $200 dollar price point, I might consider a purchase. And a repaint.
Ralph

Trainworld sent me an email and asked me to do a survey on this set. So I did pretty much the same info i put up above. Would I buy it, at what price, who would I buy it for etc. The Regal
