Piko 'Amtrak' Taurus

Nah. What’s a shame is the termites threw you out of the woodwork…again.

Figured it wouldn't be long before you showed up to defend your buddy....

But seriously folks - what’s wronge with toy trains in the garden? Does everything have to measure up to some German’s (or in this case Canadian’s) ideal of what a garden railroad model should be? If a manufacturer decides to put an Amtrak scheme on a loco why does it bother some folks so badly? If you don’t like it - don’t buy it!
I personally think all of the fuss about everything having to conform to scale and prototype has taken a lot of the fun out of garden railroading. Taking things too seriously sometimes takes the fun out of the hobby. If scale is your thing - great…just don’t jam it down my throat!

Really guys??
:frowning:

Easy folks…

And, just don’t jam the “toy” aspect down everyone else’s throat. The issue is, and always has been, how much more does it cost to do it “to scale” than it does to do it “to toy”?
Since you don’t care, what difference would a to-scale item make to you? None.
But, if you have to whack two cars up to make one scale length, what difference does that make to someone who cares about scale fidelity? Lots.

Your issue seems to have always been with this that the not-necessarily-to-scale-toy was your forte. Great. Go for it. Probably also used to subscribe to A.W.N.U.T.S.

I’ve always had an issue with any manufacturer who has a “take it or leave it” attitude.

Why come up with “fantasy” trains and/or paint schemes? Would you care if the model was protoypically to scale and painted correctly? Nope.

Would those who care buy it if it was “fantasy”?

There are folks out there who could not discern the difference if it smacked them up the side of the head.

So, they keep buying the stuff, but the sales never reach those who care, and what do we get?

Bankruptcy.

Not exactly sure who appointed you junior internet policeman, but if you've got the badge, great!

I think they'd have better luck puting Pennsy pinstripes, NYC lightning stripes, or a Santa Fe Warbonnet on it. People would by cockroaches if they came in those paint schemes. ;)

Later,

K

I think this is a good reference to my post. But if the manufacturer’s just concentrate on those who will buy cockroaches, at some point, they won’t want anymore, and the entire market of those who have an aversion to an F-7 that is 1:26, 1:27, and 1:28, depending on where you measure it, is closed to them as manufacturers.

If you want manufacturer’s to thrive, and be successful, YOU should be out there leading the charge for more models to-scale.

NO badge… LSC has just always been a quiet calm no politics site for quite sometime IMO…My name is Dave too …I build and play with trains, then share them on this site ONLY and have for a few years now?
LSC is a calming place for me while enjoying this hobby !!

You’re in his crosshairs now David…better duck…loose cannon!

Then keep calm. Don't read it. All that, full explanation, and MB/JJS/Whatever can only come back with what he came up with? No politics here, unless they come out of Oz. I went back and looked, sure seems like we're discussing trains. You have something to impart on PIKO Taurus being painted up for Amtrak? Maybe you don't think PIKO or Amtrak classifies as trains? Sure, it's a calming place. Just don't go to sleep. You never know what's going to pop up.

Blah, Blah, Blah…

Ralph,

There’s certainly something to that statement.

Piko should paint it in the Phase V scheme, then it would look like the ACS-64 locomotives Amtrak has on order from Seimens.
Paul,

There are differences between the Euro versions and what Amtrak gets. To get it right would require new tooling for the body, but getting the right paint scheme would get it as close as many other things in “G”.

Now that we have established that the model is a gratuitious repaint, common with many manufacturers, I feel the phase 3 colour scheme does not suit the body shape. The loco needs a colour scheme devoid of horizontal stripes. If a fantasy road offering then maybe a fantasy colour scheme is more suited to the body shape.

Zebra Stripes.
That’ll work.

And, it seems the good Doctor borrowed a page (or several) from the old LGB operations manual…just repaint, repaint, repaint.

Of course, you could mount Pluto or Goofy on the roof…or an old Lionel-style cops-and-robber running around it while it moves.

Hmmm… the fact that you know about the old cop and robber car indicates that you must have played with such trains at some point in your life (perhaps back when you weren’t so cynical?).
Maybe if we had more items like these in addition to the “scale” items you prefer we might attract some new YOUNG people who could put some life into this hobby which seems to be turning into a breeding ground for old, cynical, miserable tight a__es who can’t seem to see beyond their own limited view of what this hobby should be!

I actually like/want both!

I collect Lionel “G-scale” precisely because it is “Toy-like”. Reminds me of “tin-plate”. I would not own as much as I do if it where more “scale-like”.

I equally enjoy my 1:20.3 stuff for its nauseating scale purity.

So yes, I would be annoyed if everything was 100% scale (or 100% toy).
