Piggybacked locos

This item came up on yesterday’s “Day in history” on the main page:

“1898 - In a blinding snowstorm on the New Haven Railroad, engine #684, pulling a two-car milk train to Fitchburg, Massachusetts, collides with engine #823 which was pushing a snow-plow. Fortunately, engine #684 ran up the plow and ended up on top of #823 and no one was seriously hurt. Later, engine #823 carried #684 piggyback to the depot.”

Man, that had to be quite a sight! Too bad there’s no photo.

I do believe I have that photo in one of my books.
Sounds familiar.

Ray, thats what they used to call a “cornfield meet”

Thanks! Cool pic. It’s amazing that they could still drive it.

When I was searching for pics of that particular collision yesterday, I came across a really bad one from 1904. The force of this collision was tremendous. Even the huge drive rods were bent:

I’ve done better with my old Marx steamers.
