Pics new Piko Euro 0-6-0T engine

Jerry, compare this image of a USA Trains switcher to the Piko image linked by Jack Lynch.

Then there’s this american prototype

I like it, even though I can see that it’s not perfect.

That's right! Lets talk about that Starter set! If it comes in close to what is advertised in Germany (approx. $300) it should be a seller.
Silvergate are listing retail at over $400.....

I wonder what other Piko US distributors will be listing this for?

If they are going to charge $400 I hope Silvergate has a large warehouse to store what they aren’t going to sell.
I run several different scales together as long as it “looks OK”. However, if I were to buy a "set ", even I would expect it all to be the same scale.
The hopper cars look OK with the engine. The boxcar doesn’t.
And the 1/32 cars just won’t look OK with the rest of my rolling stock.

Yes, if they are charging 400, forget about it

$400 (MSRP) for the complete starter set- track, transformer, loco and cars.
Street price for the set will most lkely be around $299- sounds like a bargain to me!

Hi Folks,

Piko, or train dealers in germany list the new starter set with 199.00E, that would be 282.9281 USD. Silvergate is listing the same item for USD$ 417.99 USD.

Do we really need Silvergate to jack up the prices? (Be aware that shipping in a bulk reduces the price)

Europeans tend to say " i earn money" and Americans tend to say " i make money" is that what it is?

Convert your Euros to dollars PJ and add shipping to the states (even in bulk there is a cost).
Also is that a discounted dealers price? What is PIKO’s German MSRP?
My guess is that U.S. dealers will be selling it between $299 and $350.

Hi JJ, the exchange rate i used is from today. I am aware of shipping cost, see my comment. ( unlike you, i shipped several containers from or to Europ, i am aware of cost)

Are you aware that the $299 is the price i pay in a toy train store, that this price includes already the mark up of a dealer and local shipping and handlin.

I'm sure if the street price comes in under $300 it will improve sales. Myself, I would be more interested in the loco at the right price. If the set wasn't such a mish-mash of scales I would be much more interested. Had the range been 1/24th-1/27th, I would have been OK with that. I wonder why a manufacturer would introduce their loco's in 1/27th instead of using a scale already in use. Please consider this as constructive criticism. I am happy to see another manufacturer releasing large scale railroad products. I will be more than happy to purchase Piko products if they meet my needs at a reasonable price. Ralph

Hey Ralph, luckily i do not care for any starter sets, i have a few of them. What bothers me is that Silvergate ads a $100 just because they can. Since i have 25 Engines i have time to wait until something a bit more interesting comes along, i have time to wait for other manufacturer to produce/import other goods. Pleas, do not get me wrong, i like that Piko is doing something, all i am saying is that what they do is not my thing.

Yup, cheaper from the indy importers as I suspected…

http://www.tee-usa.com/store/product9601.html

Euro Rail of Canada does not have it listed yet, but has the other items at lower prices too.

The proposed pricing information is pretty interesting. Going to be even more interesting to see where the street prices settle.

As a comparison, consider a Bachmann Big Hauler starter set, which is consistent in scale and era. They have a real American outline narrow gauge steam locomotive with operating valve gear (a good scale model) and an 8 wheel tender. Passenger sets have two lighted passenger cars. Freight sets have one or two freight cars plus either a lighted caboose or combine. These sets have street prices between $140 and $180.

How does that compare to the “floor sweepings” combination that PIKO / LGBoA / Silvergate is about to release? German standard gauge prototype, modeled to no particular scale with two, too small (1:32) scale, specialized ore cars and a too large (1:24 scale) caboose. Oops, forgot about the fine German quality! Is it possible that doubles the price?

Before the PIKO fans jump all over my use of the word “scale” in the same paragraph as “starter set”, let me point out that it doesn’t cost any more to manufacture stuff that is reasonably scale and era consistent than to use whatever is laying around. I put those lacks down to plain laziness and cheapness on the part of the manufacturer.

As to having an American prototype, I never said there weren’t American 0-6-0 saddle tank engines. But other than sharing the 0-6-0 wheel arrangement, they don’t really look much like that German engine. Check out details such as domes, stack, bunker, pilots, etc. Even the wheels, wheel size, and wheel spacing do not appear close to the American prototypes I’ve seen.

I guess most 5 year olds will recognize it as a train, which seems to be the standard for so-called “starter sets.”

Happy RRing,

Jerry

They’re not adding to the price “just because they can” they are doing it because they have to. There IS a slight difference in the value of the Euro compared tto the U.S. Dollar if you haven’t noticed lately!

Yes, but EUR 199 with the tax removed and convereted is closer to $250 than $417…

Is the EUR 199 an MSRP or a dealer discounted price?
I think the folks over here are astute enough to keep the price in line and the $417 is a SUGGESTED MSRP.

German MSRP:

http://www.piko.de/produkt_db/check.php?page=shop&grand_id=3&parent_id=22&sss=180

199 Euro x .81 = 162 (removing tax)

162 Euro x 1.42 (today’s rate) = $232 US.

$232 < $417

So the private importer price in the US of $250 is reasonable.

Ooops, I see it is EUR 199.99. So add anther $ or so to the US price…

OK as expected they’re already up on eBay

Check out those wheels! Even better compare to the prototype and then decide how you like it.

Oooooooooops forgot this is the auction

…I don’t feel any arousal in any part of my body over that. The ore cars were no hell when MDC produced them; the trucks were the pits…I notice the thing is so cheap that the loco doesn’t even have a front coupler…No…not a winner by any means…but then I’m sure many collectors will rush out and buy several sets. I do hope they enjoy them.
