Picked up some LGB Ore Cars unassembled in bags

Last Labor Day on a visit to a very well known coastal LHS here, I found a large cardboard box in the entryway containing plastic bags full of plastic parts just like a model car kit, when I inquired I was informed that these were LGB Ore Cars, complete, just unassembled - sans trucks.

Apparently on a visit to San Diego recently the owner picked them up at the LGBoA warehouse, the way he said this made me think to myself that they were selling anything they could to dealers to keep the cash coming in! Somewhere down the line these were sent from the factory to San Diego, but SD didnt have anyone to assemble them nor any red boxes to package and ship them in. So he got at least one large box of these parts, and must have got them for cheap cause he was selling the unassembled parts kits… at $20 a car!!!

How much were those freaking car sets when they came out??? So of course I got 3 of them.

I started to put them together last weekend using the service parts diagrams downloaded from LGBs website, so far its been very slow going on car #1, lots of parts and theres no clearly apparent sequence of assembley so I’m playing it by ear, been a real PITA, finally figured out the way to go is from the bottom up.

Pics to follow as I assemble them. May go back for more if these go together nicely.

Bottom up? Now that’s a revelation!

Almost like building a house, eh?!?

PS Did the guy get any other “goodies”??

I went from this…

To this…

Now to find trucks…

Looking good Vic! Great price too…

Toad

OK Since I’ve already gotten some inquiries off-forum, I’m letting the cat out of the bag…I got them at Gold Coast Station in Ventura, they are locatable on-line, give Hans a call. I’m sure a few of the west coast guys figured that out from my initial post.

I dont know how many he has left, if any, I only saw the one box. Good luck.

Okie dokie, finally got some proper trucks, luckily someone was selling on Ebay 4 pairs of trucks, and more luckily I won the auction, so they all will match each other. New bolster, 3/16 square basswood, epoxied into place

dont forget to add a bearing surface, I use a washer and two styrene strips, this allows the truck to pivot a little from front to back while the styrene strips keep it level from side to side. A little paint

Add trucks

All done!

Now just have to do the other two kits.

And build a layout to run on…

Ouch!!!

Nothing like being smacked on the butt with reality…

Better than being clouted over the head, on the whole :)

He had a cute outdoor layout before he tore down the old garage…and promised a better outdoor layout after the garage was rebuilt. He got a head of steam built up and then it fizzled…

That happens to me every day. I start off slow and then taper off…

If you are battery/rc you can always come to the desert and run them!

And your outdoor layout, Warren? :) :) LS, not VLS.

TOG

My enemy is time, and an arm-lenth full of other “priorities” that must be cleared up 1st, or SWMBO will give me third degree.

LS, not VLS.”

It seems that every time I get to the starting point I change plans…and have to go back to square one… At least I have an indoor layout…which by the way has half of it’s track ripped up. I’m taking advantage of this good weather and weathering all the track. That project should, weather permitting, be done this week. Maybe next year on the outdoor one. Which by the way will be a point to point 100% battery. Oh, and in 7/8ths…none of that dinky stuff…:stuck_out_tongue:
