Photobucket

When I first joined LSC, I wasn’t sure how to include photographs in a post. Hans dispensed some advice when I posted a question about it, but even his precise instructions didn’t yield a result, further proof that Dave + graphics = TROUBLE. Looking through the recent posts about avatars (thanks again, Bob!), other folks seem to be unsure about transferring image data to LSC. If you open a free Photobucket account, your life might become easier - mine certainly has. The graphic, below, shows what my avatar looks like in Photobucket. Beneath the avatar are four references to it that were automatically created by Photobucket when I uploaded the photo. For LSC, Direct Link works fine.

Once you’ve uploaded a photo to Photobucket, all you have to do to post it on LSC is: 1) click on the Direct Link box under the photo you want to post - Photobucket copies the link for you. 2) paste the link into your LSC post (hold down a

Absolutely. Photobucket works well that way. I just uploaded my own avatar using Photobucket.

What is photobucket???

But why not let Bob host your pics in the Freight Shed.
Worth every penny!

Oh!!! OK John Thanks for the info.

I was just wondering if it had some other magical properties than pix hosting.
I can host my own pix at the RCS website.

John, I prefer Photobucket because it lets me organise my photos into train-related and other categories (i.e., it’s not site-specific). I’m hoping to get going on the non-train stuff sometime soon.

No magic, Tony, just a free web site that allows both stills and videos to be grouped together in what Photobucket calls “albums”. Unfortunately, the feature linking stills on Vimeo (www.vimeo.com), my preferred site for videos, doesn’t work.

just uploaded my avatar c/o Photobucket, I hope it works

worked easily thanks to Dave H for his information.

Thanx for that link. I’d heard of Photobucket, but didn;t know much about it.

Just joined it and uploaded a bunch of vacation pix from San Diego…seems a good place to store pix other than train related.

I clicked on you album link Ken, and it is nice that they provide all of the different code references for cut and paste. That’s a nice touch and very convenient.

Has anyone read all of the fine print on their user agreement? I’m always skeptical of free stuff. Could it be that Photobucket gets rights to you photos, or that by posting there you are putting them in the public domain? I don’t know, just suspicious recalling some issues about photos at a few other sites that we won’t mention.

Jon

Hey Ken, is Kevin trying to show us the size of the fish he just caught, or the one that got away?

Jon, your concern is not misplaced. As far as I can see, Photobucket repects your privacy - you don’t have to make all your images public, and you’re not surrendering any legal rights you have to your property (i.e., your photos). Vimeo’s privacy settings are even better.

Photobucket is hoping you’ll shell out for their Pro account, so it’s in their interest to blast you with as many annoying ads as possible so you’ll part with your cash (the Pro account is ad-free). They’ll have to make their ads a lot more annoying before I’m tempted.

I think Kevin was just egg-sited about being in San Diego…it was his first trip there. As for me, I wanted to visit Ray’s layout, but unfortunately couldn’t fit it into the itinerary…maybe next time, Ray.

Upgradin was the first thing I looked at. $25 a year ain’t a bad deal. As for privacy, if I wanted that they wouldn’t be on the internet, I have photo albums full of family stuff I don’t want to share publically.

I joined Flickr about a month ago. It also seems to be a good value and it also has privacy settings. One can set his photos to private, public, or to share with friends only. But, I’m like Ken in that anything I don’t want the world to see won’t be uploaded to the internet…for sure. My purpose was to make more of my pictures publicly available. The link to my Flickr site is in my sig.

I did take a peek at the fine print. You do retain ownership of and all rights to the content you upload to photobucket (assuming it’s yours to own, of course). However, you are granting photobucket a royalty-free license to use your “public” content as they see fit: Modify it, reformat it, use it for advertising, etc.

I quit reading at that point.

That’s kind of what I thought. No thanks. I don’t mind paying for space, it’s very inexpensive and I don’t have any of these “issues”

This isn’t to say it’s not a great deal for those who don’t mind their stuff being used for profit by others.

True enough. Just doesn’t sit well with me personally.

I'm with Warren on this. If you want to keep stuff private, don't upload it to the web - period!

Don’t bother to go looking on my flickr site for any of my full moon naked dance rituals. They aren’t there…

Thank you , Warren.

We all appreciate that.
