Phone Scam

Got a call on my cell from 213-325-3204. I was not in the mood to talk to someone I didn’t know, so I didn’t answer it. I Googled the number and came up with this info. Geeze, bandits are everywhere.

Steve,
latest scam is one receives a phone call on their mobile and the operator asks the receiver to press a number on their mobile to transfer the call to a waiting operator. The call is then transferred to a phone server with call per minute costs up in the quarazillion dollars per minute arena. Strange but true - many people, conditioned to always responding to their mobile phone, simply follow the operator’s request and finish up with an exhorbitant phone accont.

Ain’t technology wonderful!!

I’m recently getting calls from an automated system with a number in West Virginia. The message is ‘you ned to renew your new car warranty. Don’t make the mistake of driving without a warranty.’

The last new car I bought was in 1994 and the average age of the four vehicles I own is a little over 33 years. (My 1931 Ford AA truck does tend to skew that number a little.)

It then gives me a choice of ‘Press 1 for warranty service’ --or-- ‘Press 2 to be removed from this list’.

Over the last two months, I’ve done some of each. Once when I pressed 1, a guy who sounded Indian, but didn’t speak enough English to make me understand what he was saying talked for a half minute or so. When I told him I hoped he and his family would roast in the same fire I was cooking a cow on, he hung up. Mostly pressing 1 doesn’t do anything.

Pressing 2 doesn’t ever do anything.

I suspect some data mining or other devious intent per Tim’s post, but I haven’t seen any evidence of it yet.

The 800Notes.com website Steve cited has ~229 posts about the number.

Happy RRing,

Jerry

I keep getting letters about renewing my auto warranty. “They haven’t seen Sophira!”

Steve, I NEVER answer my cell or home phone unless I recognize the caller. If it's important, they'll leave a message. None ever do.
