Large Scale Central

Pennsy transformation to DM&IR

I recently picked up an old Lionel Pennsy caboose with battery lighting (2 D-cells), along with a spare Pennsy 4-4-2 tender. I always wanted a Lionel DM&IR Atlantic, since they did not make one, I did. Converted both the caboose and tender to track powered lighting. The tender was re-numbered to “5102” to match my current NYC 4-4-2 and also supplies power to the engine for smoother running. Wheels are SS I picked up on ebay years ago. Custom dry transfer lettering. Not the most impressive thing on the planet but I like being able to completely change over a piece of rolling stock (or two) in a single afternoon. Now to start adding those USA DM&IR ore cars (old Lionel tooling!). BEFORE:

Mark,
My favorite caboose is a Lionel Pennsy like yours that I repainted and put on some of the small steel Bachmann wheels.
It had power pick-ups for the interior lighting, which I removed.

Ralph,

I’m glad I’m not the only one who appreciates these little cabooses. Lionel made some junk to be sure, but some of their “Large Scale” stuff was pretty neat.

Mark;

Nice job! Thanks for sharing. I too like those little “side door” cabooses. I have two or three of them.

Best,
David Meashey

Nice work :slight_smile:
