Most everyone must be staying inside keeping warm right now (I know I just got in from shoveling more of that annoying white stuff…in 6 degrees)
Bruce, the walkway grating is something I wanted to try. At first when I was planning this caboose I knew I would need a lot of roofwalks. The prototype caboose used leftover roof walks (I learned that when I had the chance to get up in and around a real one). They just kept laying them next to one another.
At first I was going to order a crapload of USA Trains roofwalks and use them but I decided to try and see if I could get some laser cut. So I drew up my own roofwalks (from industry drawings) and made adjustments so they could be produced.
So these are made of .04 styrene. Each end platform uses 5 and a 1/2 of them. The piece cost for me was just under 7 dollars each (Not cheap but I 'm not budget restricted).

That’s cool…the caboose you were on is the class N11, the class I built is a N9, another similar is the class N6. There are differences between the different classes.

The walkways I had laser cut by RMS Laser in California.
If the roofwalk on a USA Trains 40 or 50 foot boxcar would work for you, you could call them and order just the roofwalk.

I really like the front and back decks…what were they used for, the purpose, if I can ask? I can’t believe this is scratchbuilt, you are very good to say the least.
You gave me an idea from the walks. I ran down stairs to see if I had a USA box car around and noticed the ones on some CF hoppers look really close to what I’m after. I will try to cast them first. Thanks!

They are used in transfer service between rail yards or short switching runs, they lack sleeping, cooking or restroom facilities - they do have benches inside long enough for scoutmasters to sleep on though The bigger deck gave the brakeman more safety/room to ride the increased distances outside the cab

What a awesome job on that caboose. WOW. I also have a soft spot in my heart for the Penn Central my first boyhood train set had a green F7 PC.
I have never seen a caboose like that. Maybe those long decks on the front and back was where the tables went for the alfresco dining? LOL
I had never seen nor heard of a transfer caboose until now but tonight I was on youtube looking up Schnabel cars and lo and behold there was a transfer caboose and a bay window one to boot.
