Large Scale Central

Penn Central N9 Transfer caboose model

Hey guys,

Well it’s been a while since I’ve scratchbuilt a model. I’ve been working on this one for well over a year, but at this point I’m only a couple whistles, hoses, cut levers and brake links away from it being complete so I thought I’d post a few pics of it. It’s 1/29 scale.

Although I model DT&I I picked this because my Grandparents lived within site of the NYC/PC/CR line from Toledo to Jackson and I remember seeing these on the back of some of the trains. Eventually I’ll have a GP7 painted black PC to go with it.

Enjoy,
Brian Briggs.

Very nice. Great workmanship too. I have never seen a caboose like that before.

Great looking caboose! Very well done. What did you use for that grating?

Nice, Brian. Although I 've always had a hard time accepting the PC, being a diehard PRR guy.

Nice work, Beautiful caboose…

That is sure a sharp looking caboose Brian. Fine work.

Awesome, Brian… Just awesome…

Outstanding Brian, You sure you won’t adopt me ?

Love it Brian…I’m an “in the closet” PC fan

Rooster, I have come out of the closet. I mean as far as being a PC fan that is.

That’s beautiful. I am not a fan of transfer cabeese, but that one is a jewel. Very nice.

Thanks guys,

Most everyone must be staying inside keeping warm right now (I know I just got in from shoveling more of that annoying white stuff…in 6 degrees)

Bruce, the walkway grating is something I wanted to try. At first when I was planning this caboose I knew I would need a lot of roofwalks. The prototype caboose used leftover roof walks (I learned that when I had the chance to get up in and around a real one). They just kept laying them next to one another.

At first I was going to order a crapload of USA Trains roofwalks and use them but I decided to try and see if I could get some laser cut. So I drew up my own roofwalks (from industry drawings) and made adjustments so they could be produced.

So these are made of .04 styrene. Each end platform uses 5 and a 1/2 of them. The piece cost for me was just under 7 dollars each (Not cheap but I 'm not budget restricted).

I’ve slept in one of those cabooses

If anyone is planning a trip anywhere near Rochester NY in the future you can ride one of these PC cabooses - at http://rgvrrm.org/about/railroad/pc18526/index.htm

Truth?

If so that rules!

Scout groups can spend the night for free if doing a service project at the R&GVRR

Wow ! That build is clean! Very sharp.
Could I ask where you get the walkways from?
I’m thinking they would make good intakes for my MP15AC switcher build.
Could I get them from your drawings or order? (or whatever you would call it?)
I ordered some screen. I don’t think it will look that good.

Mark,

That’s cool…the caboose you were on is the class N11, the class I built is a N9, another similar is the class N6. There are differences between the different classes.

Joe,

The walkways I had laser cut by RMS Laser in California.

If the roofwalk on a USA Trains 40 or 50 foot boxcar would work for you, you could call them and order just the roofwalk.

I really like the front and back decks…what were they used for, the purpose, if I can ask? I can’t believe this is scratchbuilt, you are very good to say the least.

You gave me an idea from the walks. I ran down stairs to see if I had a USA box car around and noticed the ones on some CF hoppers look really close to what I’m after. I will try to cast them first. Thanks!

John,

Thanks, I’m not sure why they had the big platforms. Maybe someone else knows that answer.

They are used in transfer service between rail yards or short switching runs, they lack sleeping, cooking or restroom facilities - they do have benches inside long enough for scoutmasters to sleep on though  The bigger deck gave the brakeman more safety/room to ride the increased distances outside the cab
