PayPal account spoofs

Quite regularly, shortly after using PayPal for eBay purchases, I receive the usual fake PayPal email stating that my account is limited and that I must click on the enclosed link to reinstate my account in full. As usual, I onforward the email to PayPal or eBay as appropriate. For some months now I have noticed that PayPal does not send the return email thanking me for highlighting these spoof email attempts to obtain my PayPal account details. Could breach of PayPal ‘security’ be so common that they no longer wish to highlight this problem?

Of cause I always did wonder as to how these fraudulent emails did coincide with each recent PayPal purchases. EBay supposedly hides the buyer’s identity, so where do the hackers get the current account activity details?

Makes ya wonder …

I don’t have paypal, and never have had Paypal, but I still get those scamming emails, so I don’t think it’s related to any purchases…

I agree. I have an account, but haven't used it in months. Got a scam Paypal mail today. I used to forward them on too, but now I just delete them.

Me too.

Me three!! I get em from my telephone co. and paypal, ebay etc. If you have ever entered the net or sent an email they can spam emails, and the like from anywhere. Have you ever called Ebay to report a suspicious auction??? Hah like watchin outsourced the tv program, and that hokey commercial where the girl tries to redeem her points and the two guys on the other end one of them says his name is some female name!! Nobody much cares about scams anymore, they would just like to have you think they do. I have in the last two weeks encountered up to and exceeding 20mins wait time, and finally resort to just reporting through electronic means!! There have been a couple of interesting ads in the last 2-3 weeks. One guy says its just a link to his store, and if you bid, you lose your money to him non refundable, and the other one has about 15 ads saying to bear with him and give him time to complete his ad with him and don’t bid I won’t be able to ad pics and or such, and another one has about 12 ads going from $200 up to $3000 on nothing! Reported but they are still there as of yesterday!! Oh boy TIZ THE SEASON!! Regal

Interesting.
I just got a Pay-Pal fix my account Email.
I had to sign up for a Pay-Pal account about ten years ago to sell a Borg Warner overdrive for a Model’A’ Ford.
That’s my first and last Ebay encounter.
I didn’t think to report it,just deleted it as above.
Bill

Just delete them now too. If I have time later, I’ll chk my acc’t on a fresh scrn but have never even any news posted via PayPal !

Same as emails regards acc’t affected blah blah on some u.s. based banks or cc Since these are businesses I’ve never done biz with … LOL . . while pushing delete key !

doug c

the newest thing for me are mails about helping me with my federal taxes. my US-federal taxes…

and in the names of each and every transporting co. i get mails to give my address to the local offices (that don’t exist in this country) for receiving my pending packet (that i never ordered)

I personally like how meticulous they are in recreating an “official” Pay Pal message, but can’t seem to be bothered to spellcheck the subject line. My “accont” was “limmitted” last week.

Later,

K

You too :open_mouth:
Ralph

I was not making the point that these spoof emails do randomly occur, but firstly, PayPal no longer responds when a spoof email is forwarded on to them (lack of interest on their behalf?) and secondly, the spoof emails correspond with recent account activity (not sporadic). Now considering that both eBay and PayPal offer secure sites, how do the cyber crooks determine my recent account activity? If my computer was compromised then account details would already be available to them.

They don't. Like any spam, they send out millions of these emails every day. Law of averages says that you'll get hit the day after you have a transaction. Nothing nefarious about it.

As far as nobody responding, the sheer number of fake emails I get, and complaints about them ‘coming from here’, precludes me responding to them. I can’t imagine a site like PayPal, with 1000x the email load.

Well I hate to say it,but PayPal & Ebay aren’t as secure as they want us to believe.
If someone want’s to get in your system there is little you can do to stop them.
That is the more computer savvy they are the harder they are to keep out.
And I may be sorry for this next remark but I’ll make it any way.
I don’t trust the Chinese Government I had to duck too many of there bullets.
The sooner we stop buying from that country the better I will like it.
Ok next topic.

May be someone else is reading your emails.
You have to remember emails are not like letters they are more like a post cards
Anyone can read it along it’s way even common encrypted emails.
So how do you think they get them.
Another way they get address is from forwarded emails.
I always erase any unneeded addresses and forward the emails forward email to more than 1 person by using BCC not CC.
The (B) stands for Blind it only shows the receivers address not all the addresses you are forwarding or sending to.
This should be common practice. Lear to protect yourself and your friends.
