Painting models to look like concrete at Warren's

Warren Mumpower and I were discussing his attempt to paint a tunnel entrance and some grain towers to look like concrete. He tried to do it with one color, and said that he was disappointed with how it turned out. He said that it was very green, and, indeed it is. Yet, he says that when the pain stick is laid on the concrete floor at Lowes, it almost disappears.

I gave it some thought over the night, and came to the realization that concrete is not just one color. Our brains process it as one color, but it is really made up of grays, blacks, greens, reds, probably every color of the rainbow.

I wonder what would happen if you took an air brush and lightly weathered in different colors until it looked right?

You can always paint over it.

why not use a light mortar mix dilute it well and paint it on?

Make sure you look at the paint chip in the same light of the tunnel portal!

C'mon, Bruce, that is too easy.

I think one of the things I’ve said in the past is that I need to fix the lighting in the basement before I can correct the concrete… The color on the silos would be ok with some weathering. But I think it’s hopeless on the tunnel. That needs to be of a different color. One thing I’ve noticed about concrete is that there are no 2 batches that are the same color. It seems to vary from an almost white through various shades of gray to the almost green that I have.

Rule #1 for looking at color is not in Floresent light… I am in the furniture bus. they willnever do this
when trying to match another finish Always incandesent lighting to matching color

Warren,
There is some kind of Primer you can get that they use on plywood for mobile home skirting.
It looks exactly like concrete, and has the texture of concrete.
But, I can’t remember the name of it. He had a display of it set up in his store.
Chuck Inlow used to buy it from a paint outlet in Greenacres. I used to pick it up on my way to CdA every morning.
Ask Chuck. It’s perfect for “Concrete paint.”
He’s a member on this site. I’ll forward this thread to him.

John, save your breath. I’ve already checked it out. They discontinued the product 3 years ago…:frowning:

Try a textured paint like Krylon “Make it Stone”. http://www.krylon.com/main/product_template.cfm?levelid=5&sub_levelid=8&productid=1770&content=product_details I used it on my turntable pit wall and I really like the effect.

I was looking at those the other day. Which color did you use there?

I went to buy another can of this yesterday. It would appear that I did NOT use “Make it Stone”, as they don’t carry it. I think I used Rustoleum Multi-Color Textured Paint. I THINK it was BISQUE…which is more brown than gray…at least that’s what I got. I plan to use it on my concrete stairs and loading platforms.

Having tried to model concrete for years, I would say concrete is more light brown or dull buff than grey. At least in this part of the World.

Now all I need is a warm day sometime this year. I’m another of the “Paint it outdoors” gang.
