Painting disaster--recovery

I took the day off and finished the RS-3 that I messed up. Or almost finished it–it needs some weathering. Thanks very much to Dave Funk for steering me straight on the color. The Krylon camo green is very easy to work with an the color is not bad. I added a few details the Reading always ran with–the gable detail over the cab window, the exhaust pipe, the marker lights–the original aristo dummy lights are ugly–the horns

Thanks everyone. Now I need to figure out where to put it.

Mike,

That is gorgeous! Well done.

Mike,
Fine job. Looks great.
The end result was worth all the trouble.

That really came out nice. Sorry it was such a project, but it was worth every bit of the effort. Probably looks nicer than the scalecoat would have.

Oh, And before Fr. Fred beats you up, you better edit your post and change it to classification lights  I agree that the stock Aristo ones are ugly. Any one know what prototype they came from?

Are we sure they are not out of the parts bin? :stuck_out_tongue:

I always thought they were port and starboard running lights.

Thank you all!

I did find those in the parts bin and I stand corrected–classification lights it is

That came out great. ou did a nice job painting it and the color looks great

Looks great Mike. A little diesel grime and you’re ready to run!

Mike, looks like it’s fresh out of the paint shop… Would never know you had paint problems with it…

Looks terrific, Mike!

Mike, Your loco looks fantastic!!! Looks like the ones I saw in the early 70’s. A little weathering on the trucks and she’ll be done! Dave

Mike,

The paint job looks factory done. What finally worked to get all the bad paint off? I’ve had very good luck with the Krylon spray cans and those camo colors are great. I’m just amazed at how clean it is around the engine room doors.

Thanks very much everyone. It turned out the best way to get the scalecoat off was to…spray it with krylon. I tried Krylon, camo black, gray primer, and clear satin, and they all made the scalecoat wrinkle up. Then I’d flood it with paint thinner to wash away the gloppy mess, and then use a toothbrush on the details. Nasty, messy job, and my wife is still giving me the fish eye because of the smell in the house.

Hah, paint smells are far better than the odor a boiled deer head produces. Just ask my wife about the time I cleaned a head for mounting on the kitchen stove!

Nice paint job too.

Jon.
