Painting an RDC or Streamliner car

Okay, I KNOW that there exists primers out there that can etch into the aluminum and create a decent bond for painting. I encountered such a primer while working in the auto parts factor back home just after 9/11.

My question is simple… what can I use, so that I can create a very nice paint scheme on an Aristo RDC? Imentioned teh streamliners because I believe they have a similar surface.

I already have the RDC coming, and am now worried I made a mistake in acquiring this thing (Not because of the equipment, but because I may not be able to paint it as I planned).

I talked with the guy who is selling the RDC to me, and he isn’t convinced its possible to do a two-color paint scheme on the RDC due to prior attempts. I haven’t decided on which of three schemes I’m planning on, but the simplest is simply a black roof & under carriage and a pumpkin orange body.

Any thoughts out there?

You can also go the extra step and bake the finish on in a low temp oven.

Did you explain the paint method in your thread? If you did, I missed it. I saw pictures of the painted streamliners, but didn’t notice a mention of how you painted them.

Thought I stated that I used rattle cans of Krylon.

I did use an alcohol bath after a scrubbing with dish soap and water.
Base coats (2) of light gray primer, and then 2 to 3 coats of color all allowed to dry for 5 to 7 days before remasking for next color. Because I used plastic for some of the window mods, I did not bake the finish on my streamliners but would if the cars were all aluminum.

Thank you for the nudge Jon.

An after thought on the Krylon. I did have a couple of cars that showed a bubble effect in the first coats of both primer and color. Some suggested spraying lighter coats. It was in areas not the whole car. I cleaned the affected cars back to bare metal and rewashed, than resprayed. That fixed the problem. Others have had the same experience with the new Krylon paints and have started using other brands. Just a word of caution.
