I was wondering what paint to use on my LGB Quick disconects to get the wood to look like that?
Thanks
Sean
Sean,
Try some Folk Art brand ‘Barn Wood’ acrylic paint followed with a wash of india ink and alcohol. I think I got mine at Michaels. It is their number 936. I have used this on flat car decks and roof walks with great success. Just make sure you let the paint completely dry before you apply the wash. Let us know how they turn out.
And I’m going to try the same paint on my Bachman flat.
The India Ink should be highly diluted in isopropal alcohol. I used about 1/4 teaspoon of ink to about 4 tablespoons of alcohol and that seemed about right. Start light and test it first. I tried a 50/590 mix and that as WAY too black.
I generally put a blob of black acrylic paint on a scrap piece of plastic, and just keep a cup of water handy. I’ll put a little bit of paint on the brush, then dip it in the water before applying it to the model. More water if it’s still too dark, more paint if it’s not dark enough. A paper towel comes in handy to blot up the excess.

While your at it you could probably sand off most of the fake wood grain and it would look a lot more real.
For my flats I took K’s advise I used a light tan mix with either brown or gray paint (all folk art). Mix together until you get the color you are looking for, then once dried I used a light wash of black paint. Seemed to come out well. The top of the flat was done this way the sides etc. i used a mix of rust brown and colonial red. If it is smooth sand grains into the plastic makes a difference
