Paint stripper for plastic?

Mark, nail varnish remover, or nail polish remover (here in the states) contains some acetone. Its been mixed with other stuff, so its not full strength acetone. But I would still be careful with that stuff, it can soften plastic.

Mike, as I’m sure you know, the material used by LGB prior to the bust-up is a very costy form of thermo-setting high-desnity UV-resistant plastic called Luran S, made by BASF. Very few adhesives that work by localised surface welding - MEK and so on - actually work on this stuff, so it is not a surprise that a volatile and usually corrosive-to-styrene substance like varn-nailish remover would take paint off it without harming the underlying surface.

Try that on and Acetyl-Butyl-Styrene/ABS or any of the polystyrenes and you’d be left with a smelly puddle of goo.

tac , that’s so troooooooooooooo!!!

But I was not suggesting a willy nilly sloshing around of nile vanish ; I would direct you to my previous waffle about “test is best” when brutally attacking innocent works of the modellers’ art .

I certainly have no wish to lead anyone down the path of producing piles of simulated doggy poos .

I just mentioned it because I have actually just prepared a model for painting by use of the stuff .

It smells nice too , which led to me getting a bit tired and emotional on the floor .

and then of course there are those that use DETTOL (the antiseptic) to strip paint. It does work…but its hard work…!!

BTW in my travels through the various post in various fora regarding de-natured alcohol, there was a busy back and forth between “contestants” regarding the values of ethanol, methanol, de-natured alcohol, 99% isopropyl and a few more esoteric substances. It almost felt like here on LSC and I had to check the names of a few posters to make sure they were not the usual suspects.

There was agreement on one thing - whatever you do, don’t drink the stuff. And yes, I learned a few more things today.

Since I’ve already done the shopping, I can now proceed to the garden, that is after a coffee break.

More about brake fluid.

Out in the shed I have an Aristocraft 2-4-2 in pieces, several of which have been in my trough of brake fluid for at least four years now. They’re still fine.

I’ve been so slow to take up that little project again that I may just start calling it a brake-fluid eating plastic experiment. So far, other than to soften the paint on the first day, there has been no effect whatever.

John , the trick is to get at it with a toothbrush (preferably not your own) fairly soon after putting the stuff on , it does not seem to penetrate down very far and you just keep scrubbing the paint away and going down through the paint .

That’s what I do , anyway . I’m always a bit wary of a sustained soaking .

Mike

By the way , I have a friend who is addicted to Brake Fluid , but he says he can stop any time .
