Is this layout in your yard Fred ? Very nice.
I like the raised Landscape stone area with the paths.
Yes, Bryan; the railroad seems to still be mine…!!! A long time ago, several other guys and I started a very informal group, that we named the “Ottawa Valley Garden Railroad Society”.
I had already started building the railroad, with the intent that it should be an operating railroad. The pike is not really a Garden Railroad; it is actually a Model Railroad, that happens to be out in my back yard.
More information can be found on the web page.
The success of our group is based on the informality, and the good nature of it’s membership.
We avoid politics, and religion. There are no dues collected. It seems that everyone just contributes in many different ways. We are all friends, and respect each other. We also have thick skins, and everyone has a sense of humour.
In order to satisfy most peoples’ enjoyment; we have two different operations. We alternate from “A Narrow Gauge Operation” to a "Standard Gauge Operation. Same track and features, but different styles of equipment.
The SG equipment is owned by various member, who supply their locomotives, while the NG stuff is mostly mine. We do not intermix the scales (1:29/1:22.5).
We also occasionly throw in a Saturday morning of “Run-what -you-brung”…but this is less popular these days, as most want to operate. We find that as soon as a new-comer is introduced to operation; they would rather it, to running in circles. Battery operation is standard (No track power) and Kadee #1 couplers (Body mounted) are also the standard.
The only rule that seems to make any sense around here, is: “If you feel obliged to be here; you have missed the point”…!!! People join us because they like to have fun, and enjoy the hobby of Model Railroading; in the company of other like minded individuals.
We try to maintain a very high standard of track maintenance. This increases the enjoyment of the hobby with fewer derailments, and frustrations while operating, due to these high standards.
