OVGRS 2017 Operations at Fred's

Interesting set of pics from the famous GR in Ottowa. Most enjoyable. Seeing the Kadiddlehopper twins reminded me of their dad who was on UK radio after WW2 and offered us poor starving Brits some food parcels. His catchphrase was, “have a food parcel will ya”. It struck a chord as I remember my guardian/nanny receiving a couple.

Mike’s part two of the 15th session of 2017. http://gardenrailroadottawa.blogspot.ca/2017/08/diesel-days-of-august-session-15-part.html

A cool Saturday morning for the 16th session, narrow gauge operations. http://gardenrailroadottawa.blogspot.ca/2017/09/session-16-september-tooth-twoth-2th.html

Fred’s new roof looks good! It was leaking like crazy when I was there…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Great set of pics and the folks operating the trains: getting to know the faces now! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I noticed the temporary set-up for the new ore dock. Looks like you might get a couple of Lakers alongside.

PS: I just remembered I had not made an observation regarding the fall plate made by Gilbert for Fr. Fred’s locomotive. It certainly looks good and I am sure others will want one - or maybe two. It was a serious omission by Bachmann, if they manufacturers can include extra bottle opener type couplers with their products it would not have been too difficult to include a couple of these plates, of differing dimensions, to accommodate small and large curved track.

Despite it being back to school time, Mike teaches grade 1 and 2, he managed to throw together part two of our last narrow gauge session. By the way Fred has announced the track work is down for the new ore dock! http://gardenrailroadottawa.blogspot.ca/2017/09/session-16-september-tooth-part-two.html

These post are always appreciated Steve. The regular OP sessions with so many attendees are something most would enjoy sharing. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Fred is a most welcoming host for anyone interested in joining in as you can see from his previous post. Visitors are always welcome and can either railfan or be part of the operations.

I should elaborate here in that I was congratulating your group as a whole and thinking of how nice it would be if, for those who enjoy operations, all could have even a small group in their own neighborhood to share the pleasure on a regular basis as your group is lucky enough to have. I have to agree with you there Dave, to have such a dedicated group to share your interest is truly a blessing. It has certainly added to my own enjoyment of the hobby.

The boys don’t waste any time, the ore dock is in and operational. http://gardenrailroadottawa.blogspot.ca/2017/09/new-ore-dock-in-craig-leigh.html

Thank you to Mike Hamer for the blog he faithfully maintains, and Steve McKenzie for posting the link here.

The posting of the link is a way that we hope will promote the idea of people getting together, to enjoy operating a railroad, on a more regular timing, than once or twice a year. There are many, many groups in the smaller scales that operate their railroads every week or once a month; why not in Large Scale ?

In our case; we are very fortunate to have a large group, all withing a short distance, which does make it much easier, but, the group did not just happen over a month or two; it has grown over the years, one or two people at a time. Some of them are in other scales, and some were new to the hobby, and of course a few were dedicated Large Scalers from the start.

This latest addition to the railroad, was brought about, by the need of extra trackage for the operation of the ore train. When the ore train is operated, it starts out from the far end of the railroad, picking up “Kernels” of loaded ore cars at various locations, ending up at Craigleigh, where there is a similar string of empties waiting for the return trip. These ore cars take up space, and were getting in the way of the Craigleigh yard crew, who are trying to make up regular freight trains, ready for departure, and others arriving… they were getting bogged down for lack of space. The ore dock seemed to be the answer. Bernie already has a suggested name for this ore dock…which he will present to the gang on Saturday morning…“Northland Ore Dock”. We already have an interchange track, with Doug Matheson’s “Northland Railroad” at Craigleigh, so why not let them “Own” the ore dock !!

Now; to take up Dave Marconi’s suggestion, and make contact with Cliffy Jennings, to see the “Ore dock chutes” he apparently is fabricating. Please contact me Cliff…!!!

Good progress there Fred and I must add that chutes will be a great addition to the dock.

One thing I notice, you have eliminated most of the grass cutting needs now, but I doubt I could get away with t here. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Fred look here on page 18 http://largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/27007/hale-amp-norcross/view/post_id/346063 looks like a good start on the chutes.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Or maybe photoshop something like this to get the length and blow it up to scale. Then make a vinyl print and mount it so the small parts don’t get damaged.

Dave;

A rather good idea…thank you…very much appreciated.

Here’s the link to the 17th operation session of the year, amazing that the weather has cooperated since it has been a rainy summer here in Ottawa.
