Other Internet Service "providers"

Funny how you can get conned .
I got the FULL MONTY from Norton , to protect my computer .
Hah !
I just got a message from them after the usual scan saying
"you have been invaded by a spy ", there followed a dissertation about 10 times as long as my arm telling ME how to get rid of it . Bit bloody late now , as soon as I tried to follow what they said , it disappeared for ever .
It was called "WIN 32 ", and by their account can record every key stroke .
So where I thought I was protected , I wasn’t . So , that’s Norton off my list of providers .
Anybody know a good company ?

Hi Mike,
Check out Trend Micro PC-cilin, we’ve used it for several years. We receive one or two updates per day. Have not had any problems with the puter since we have it.

I just downloaded PC-cillin on my laptop, seems to be doing a good job.

Hi Mike

First thing… Norton is not an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your ISP is BT Yahoo. Also, per our emails you have Norton Internet Security installed. Norton Internet Security for years has been plagued with problems, many times rendering the OS, Email, Web Browsing and even saving files useless. If using Norton, all I recommend is Norton Anti Virus… not the whole suite. Norton Antivirus 2006 is the most current version.

A big complaint I have about Norton Anti Virus however, is that they discontinued the option to “Delete Upon Detection” 3 versions ago. Therefore my recommendation for an AV application is ETrust made by Computer Associates.

However, that still leaves the need for an Anti Spyware application. AdAware SE is a trememdous, FREE application and exactly like the paid version except that the free version requires manual intervention. Spybot Search And Destroy is also another excellant Anti Spyware application and it also is free. However, it also in the free version requires manual intervention. I run both of these applicaiton daily and sometimes numerous times throughout the day.

I have a previous Tip of the Month on my website that might be a good read for you, http://dehancomputerservices.com/av.htm

Ewido anti-malware also seems to be getting some good attention.

I’ve had nothing but problems with Norton and stopped using it many years ago. We still use the anti-virus stuff at work. I swithed to AVG at home because it’s free, has frequent updates, and I can schedule it to scan early every morning.

I would add Trojan Hunter to AdAware and SpyBot. The best way to clear your machine of all this crap is to update each of them, turn off your system restore, then run these programs consecutively…at least THREE TIMES! When completed and no further files are detected by any of them, defrag and then turn your system restore on and create a restore point.

Make sure you are not confusing Anti Virus applications with Anti Spyware… These are 2 completely different necessary applications, that do completely different necessary functions…

F-Secure, very very clever.

Timmy,
Yes , I remember you told me about ISP’s ,what I meant was “here’s another service provider” in the literal sense , meaning to indicate that the so called service was crap , to put it bluntly .
An odd coincidensce , I was let out on a leash today and bumped into an old friend .While he was rubbing his ankles , we talked about this and that , and the upshot was he had a programme handy called
webroot Sky Sweeper .
Having seen the effect on his machine , I bought one , and it has cleared the nasty out of one computer --the one I mentioned that had an armful of instructions plus another ,-- And 22 others out of the other one , which had not had any anti spyware installed at all .
FYI , the ones that Norton left me in the stuff with were:
2o7.net cookie–it says this may track unique visitors to a website , as well as their personal preferences .
The other was shown as
C:\windows |system 32\drivers\etc\hosts–the windows bit of that being in capitals .
I didn’t list the 22 others ,but they included the two detailed .
Now all I need is some decent Anti Virus . I seem to have the facility to use Norton Anti Virus , not as part of N.I Security , so may try that .
Thanks for all the suggestions .
Mike

Mike, I’ve used Norton Anti-Virus on all my computers and have always been very satiisfied with the product. I haven’t yet (knock on wood) had a virus get through.
