Rob, I have seen it done. I haven’t done it myself.
Being curious about just what a Faller car system is I googled it and a bunch of images came up here.
Seeing the picture in the middle on the second row… this Faller car system look REALLY interesting LOL
First picture, second row, would be even a bit more interesting!
Here is a Youtube video. One of many.
I’m guessing this would be VERY difficult to maintain and operate outdoors. Like track power, but trickier.
If you just use battery powered vehicles and corner bumpers you might be able to get them stay in lane in a roundy-round layout. I did see this done at a layout in Thousand Oaks, CA.
Since the surface of the road is smooth, other than sweeping off, it should be easier than maintaining tracks and cleaning oxidation.
Clearly they also steer themselves, so I don’t understand your comment on keeping them in the lanes.
You might want to study it a bit more carefully before you say it does not work.

Nice mountains – must be “Twin Peaks”.
I run my RC Tanks on and around my layout. Many times the LA&C RR’s Amboy station has fended off a German Tiger attack with the aid of the trusty shermans…
