Large Scale Central

Open Letter to Ken Bianco

Hello Ken-

The August, 2014 67 page Walthers Flyer arrived today. The solitary reference to LGB was on the back page showing two ubiquitous Stainz locomotives pulling European livery starter sets.

There appears to be an “enthusiasm” disconnect between your video with Ron Gibson and Walthers executives extolling LGB’s upcoming product line up and Walther’s relegating LGB to a two-Stainz loco promotion on the last page of their Flyer.

Is TrainWorld attempting to overcome Marklin’s apparent reticence to show at least some of the product enthusiasm hopefully generated by TrainWorld’s video?

Wendell,

What makes you think that it’s Märklin’s reticence?

Its Walthers, they couldn’t give two figs for LGB, they NEVER have.

Even back when Walthers put out a gen-u-whine large scale only catalog, they never really attempted to promote LGB. Part of that was due to LGBoA consistently undercutting the MSRP and offering direct sales thru the San Diego office, it didnt help that Walthers has a very strict MSRP pricing policy (exception of course being their own product which they flog on sale constantly). Walthers got really hot under the collar about all that and eventually dropped LGB entirely.

Walthers is/was a distributor that never tolerated direct sales competition from any vendor already contracted to sell through their distribution network, to do so would invoke their wrath. When EPL when phoom! Marklin, who supposedly already had a distribution deal with Walthers, although you had to search deep and wide to fund ANY Marklin products actually being sold in the US let alone the non-existent efforts on Marklin’s behalf to market themselves. So now you have Marklin that for a long time didnt seam to give a wet slap about their US presence, now having to pay back their LGB investment and quickly wanting some sort of US presence, now having to almost reluctantly sell newly acquired LGB thru what can still be considered a hostile distributor, is it any wonder Walthers advertising stinks?

I really hope Dickie tosses out all the Euro-centric idiots at Marklin (their partly to blame) and only keeps the ones who remember that the US was at one time one of EPLs biggest markets. I have to admit LGBoA model worked really well for direct sales, parts and servicing, be nice to see something like that make a come back. LGB needs to get out from the Walthers distribution yoke or whither on the vine.

The Walther’s online catalog has almost no LGB. But the Trainworld site has a lot of LGB.

Since I am not really in the market for LGB I haven’t been paying attention, but I went looking because of this thread…

I just searched and found 252 LGB products in stock at Walthers.

Ok, I must have searched incorrectly, I found less then one page worth. Like 10 items.

Spot on, Vic. The sooner MLGB gets rid of Walthers the better.

Hey Wendell,

Marklin LGB was acquired by the Simba Dickie a little over a year ago. Janko Franke, the gentleman in the video, has a great background in business, marketing and most of all trains! As the export manager, he explained to me that they are doing their “due diligence” at the moment. He stressed that it is important to look at all three brands and understand them on a consumer, retail, distributor, and manufacturing level. Instead of making any rash or quick decisions, he wants to learn what works well, what dosn’t and what they can improve on. The LGB brand Manager, Ron Gibson, is very excited to work with Janko. Ron has been with LGB for a long time, and truly understands the LGB brand. I hope that you can give them some time, as they say Rome wasn’t built in a day! Rest assure, that they have a great understanding of the concerns from the consumer and how LGB should always been know for quality. I am not allowed to divulge certain information but the American LGB market is very important to them and they are looking forward to the upcoming years. I am confident Janko is the right man for the job. He really cares about the “LGB” name. I will do my best to keep you updated if I hear of any more news.

Best,

Ken Bianco Jr.

Ken,

I’m a Ron Gibson fan, he knows his stuff, he has his head screwed on right and … the biggest mistake the “Boys” at EPL made - and they made a lot of them! - was letting Ron Gibson go.

From Ken’s response above:
“The LGB brand Manager, Ron Gibson, is very excited to work with Janko. Ron has been with LGB for a long time, and truly understands the LGB brand. I hope that you can give them some time, as they say Rome wasn’t built in a day!”

My analysis:
Ken’s response to my question is give Marklin more time.
True, Ron Gibson has been with LGB a long time and no one has more interest and has contributed more ideas on how to return LGB to its brand name status than Ron.

So with all that experience what tells Ken Marklin needs more time?
If the miniscule promotion of LGB in the recent Walthers Flyer is any indication, Ken has the right motivation. My guess is Ken has taken the initiative and is contributing his effort to rebuild Rome.
With TrainWorld’s LGB inventory, his motivation makes a lot of sense.

Wendell,

Contracts are usually signed for x duration and/or can be canceled on an anniversary date. Let’s hope the Siebers have seen and heard enough to take the steps required.

BTW all matters Märklin run as a separate entity (not SIMBA_DICKIE), the man in charge is Florian Sieber.
