Large Scale Central

Open Day @ Glendale Junction

today!!! GJ is our local large-scale train store, run by Brian and Caroline in the beautiful village of Deeping St James, about 25 miles or so north-east of where we live.

Every year they open their extensive backyard layout to visitors to come play - they have a separate loop for steam stuff, and a lot of R1 stuff too - they are major LGB dealers, and have a store-full that would break your heart.

They also deal in Kiss, Aristocraft, Regner and Accucraft [electric and steam], Bachmann, and in spite of my urging to change over to Split-Jaw, Hillman rail-clamps.

Massoth and tons of other stuff, Piko buildings, Tenmille and Peco track, and many other lines in their little store all attract the attention of LS-ers from all over our region. It is true to say that it is they are THE centre for most of the stock for the Anglia-region of the 16mm and G-Scale Associations.

I’ll be taking piccies so that Mr Mumpower, if he would be so kind, can post a couple for ya to see how the poor live here in yUK.

I’m off now - time to bite the bullet and fill up my recently-fixed 380SL with some gasOLINE. That will undoubtedly take the shine off what would otherwise be a fine day.

Have a look at their website… www.glendalejunction.co.uk

Later.

Just drop them into my yahoo box and I’ll get them up…

Terry;

My son; unless you have changed the automobile over to “Gas”; it might be wise to use petrol or Gasolene. Trying to fill the automobile with “Gas” would be a rather smelly thought; don’t you think; and would do little to earn you a person on the passenger side, without some breathing protection device.

It seems a shame, that the store you are going to visit; doesn’t stock Bachmann products. The list you provided is extensive, but without Bachmann, it is a shame; considering that “Bachmann” is the distributor of Aristocraft on your fair Island, and the Continent.

Dear Fred - as always, you are right…but living here, surrounded by almost 4000 USAF personnel, it’s only too easy to fall into their wicked ways…

As for Bachmann products - He DOES stock them, just that in the rush to publish I fergotted. Only cars though - no locos.

See you e-mail… : )

WOW , I wish I was just 25 miles from a hobby shop like that .

But , there is way to much eye candy there , and a layout out back , oh my .

And running live steamers with the likes of Tag Gorton , bound to be fun .

All that , and the W&LLR also , are you really going to move someday ?

I thought the Brits ran their automobiles on parifin. At least that is what my Welsh cousin always called it.

Though, how you can get an internal combustion engine to burn wax is beyond me.

Paraffin is a distillate, and can be produced as a waxy substance, or as an oil; depending on it’s end use. It tends to burn very cleanly, as an oil, from what I’m told.

Depending on the area of the world, and it’s past practises; we tend to use different words for what has become a standard product.

It is so common today, to refer to “Gasolene” as just plain “Gas”, a rather crude short term, which is not a proper description of the actual product.

“Gas” is “Any aeriform or completely elastic fluid, esp. one NOT liquid or solid at ordinary temperatures…”

“Gasolene” is “A liquid got from petroleum…”

“Petrol”, which is a noun; again, probably was started as a short term for “Petroleum”, which is a mineral oil, that can be refined to produce what some peoples call “Petrol”

As with most languages; we tend to get lazy, and start using short forms for a lot of great words, which more properly describe the actual product. The use of computers and the uncivilzed need for great speed in everything we do; has hastened a new “Bastard” language, that is taking the world by storm.
But then, all languages are in flux, except where they are unnaturely, prevented by some cultures; for example the attempts by the French.

I like the words “Aerodrome” and “Aeroplane” and use them; although a lot of people think of those words as out of style; along with a word like “Plough”

One thing that erks me; is the improper use of the words: there, their, and the’re; so often improperly used by people we would think, would know better.

I’m NOT sitting here thinking that I’m of no fault. I can make all kinds of spelling mistakes without trying. My grammer is not without “Falt”. But I do try to learn, so that I can better communicate with my fellow man.

Ah, Fred’s up on his soapbox again.

Not all gases stink Fred. Natural gas doesn’t have much of a smell. It has a “smell” added to it so you know when you have a leak and yes, they are some internal combustion engines that do run on “Natural gas”…

I once had a Chevy hybrid, it burned gas and oil.

Nice website, jeez I wish we could get some of that cool Britty stuff over here.

I’ve been drooling over that brown double compartment coach. Might have to build something like that in 7/8ths…after I complete most of my other projects…:expressionless:

Dear Mr Smith - cors you can get that ‘cool Britty stuff’ in USA. I brangs it over when I comes!

Anyhow, most, if not all, do mail-order - Ivan Prior of IP Engineering asks for a surcharge of 15% fer’instance. But remember that you have to take off the 17.5% sales tax we have here on everything.

'Pends what you want…if it’s small[ish], remember that we are off to the BIG TRAIN SHOW at Llanfair on the first weekend in september.

Is there anything that takes your fancy in particular?

tac

TAC thanks, I was speaking more along the lines of I wish some LHS here where I lived would carry some of these lines.

I always had a soft spot for IP Engineering’s, stuff, particularly the Darjeeling stuff. Yes I know alls abouts the mail order, but at 2 bucks to the pound now and at 88 Pounds each to start with the overall cost is just plain prohibitive for me. :frowning:

Besides I kinda already blew my birthday money a couple weeks ago

What I blew my birthday money on

there old, but they’re not common.

I have twelve of them…paid just over $40 each a few years back…mine are old, as well, with the little battery box rather than the newer, power-sapping, wheel-wipers… tac www.ovgrs.org
