Oops in Rochester, NY

I was running errands on Weds (9-14) and stopped by the Rochester, NY CSX yard to see if there was some switching going on. As I approached the yard I noted a couple of GP38-2’s parked in a unusual spot. As I got closer I saw the the rear truck of one of the GPs was on the ground and the front truck was shall we say in an embarrassing position.
Take a look at pics I have over on Flicker and see if you’ve ever done something like this on your layout.

Hope you enjoy.

What a stroke of luck to stumble upon this

I’ve done this several times on my GRR. But I’ve never done it and had the engine or car involved remain upright

I know it serious and it could have been dangerous but I still chuckled when I first saw the locomotive askew near the switch. The yard was really full so I imagine management was pulling its hair out. Also during the lift the two mainlines, on the right side of the pics, were closed because the dozer and its counter weight fouled them.
I took a bunch of pics but only wanted to post some that showed the progress clearly. They stopped working after about 2 hrs and seemed to be waiting for something. I think something may have broken during the lift of the front end. When I left the rear truck was still on the ground and the front truck looked like the wheels were on the rails but the body was still suspended by the lifts.
All in all it was a great railfan morning.

Not in LS, but I had a passenger car split a switch on a passing siding, and with a stroke of luck, it corrected at the other end once!

Good photo catch!

Not bad photo work either! Note the (far) ‘Cat’ has it’s track off the ground, just noted that, I’m told by our loca RR man that they use the boom ‘Cats’ as they have the capacity as well as maneuverability. I’m sure Dave Ottney is quite correct, the Train Master is going nuts through all of this.

AGREED!!!

Great pics Dave!!!

See, there is a prototype for everything!

Wow, my railroad is more prototypical than I thought!

Great pics, thanks for sharing them. I wonder, do those big Cats cause any damage to the tracks, crawling all over the rails like that?

Ray,
It was very interesting watching the cats work. The guys put down very large pieces of wood on each side of the rails so that the cat treads would go up onto them before go into the rails. That way there wouldn’t be side stresses on the rails and possibly rolling the rails out of whack.

In the pic showing the far cat leaning you can see just barely make out the wood pieces next to the rail. The counter weight outriggers were pretty amazing too.

As I said I was pretty lucky to stumble across this mishap. I didn’t have my camera with me when I first saw it. Fortunately I live only about 10-15 minutes away from the yard and traffic was light, so I whipped home to get the little point and shoot. I just wish I had grabbed my wife’s SLR.
Glad you all enjoyed the pics.

Dave was that Winters Rigging that came or a CSX repair crew? Those sidewinders are quite something. Thanks for sharing!
