On the Road Again

Safe travels my friend. We’ll miss you, Jan and the rest of the gang in Massachusetts as we are heading West!

Jon, no reason to come here, we’ll be in Mass… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Trainops2015 is now a memory and we even got to share a meal with the Clarke’s at AndyC’s infamous “Land & Sea” restaurant in Peabody. You won’t believe how he pronounces that. He was trying to tell me something and he apologized, that 3 days back in Mass and he reverts to his childhood way of talking. Great place and good clams.

Monday, we did some tourists stuff seeing Newport, RI, the Cape Cod Canal and Plymouth Rock. Jan’s reaction was the same as our 14 year old son, Skipp, 23 years ago. “THAT’S IT?” Yep, after that we headed back to Littleton with a stop at a sports bar by the railroad tracks in West Concord. Good food and another great spot, with trains.

Today, we are heading “DownEast” and off to see some friends that are the caretakers of the Goat Island Lighthouse in Kennebunkport, Me. Would like to also go back to the South Portland Coast Guard Station, where I was stationed in 1974. There are lots of interesting spots up here, so we’ll see what happens.

Rode a trolley at the

“Seaside Trolley Museum” -

in the Kennebunkport area. Very nice collection and museum begun in 1939. Got up to Portland, yesterday and scoped out the

“Maine Narrow Gauge Museum”

www.mainenarrowgauge.org/

Plan to do a bike ride in the area and take a train ride this afternoon. Fantastic wetha in Potlan, Main arier.

Sure must be nice

Maine was fantastic. Upon your’s and Bob’s advice, we traveled through New Hampshire’s White Mountains and are now on the banks of Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont. Our friends in Kennebunkport are the Goat Island Lighthouse Keepers and asked if we wanted to take their place for a couple of days. We already had plans to move on, but asked for a rain check. Wow! that would be so cool.

Rode a bike trail along the Lake Champlain shore line and the tracks of the Vermont Railroad. Number of different short line railroads at the engine roundhouse and the turntable has a set of tracks stops on one end of the turntable track. Now that’s a unique prototype to model. No clue the reason

Ric sounds like a great trip if you went thru the white Mts. did you stop in North Conway? where is this round house and turntable?

hope all your travels are good

Google Earth here: Burlington Vermont railyards

Switching to Maps it looks like Ric and Jan were on the “Island Line Trail” which runs right by the turntable.

Video of turntable in operation on youtube shows the yellow stops on one end of the turntable.

I’ll ask around to see what those are for.

Accucraft/AML will have a Vermont Railway GP60 in 4-6 months. Pic of prototype

I have always loved Vermont especially the Stowe area. i remember backpacking the white Mtns in January, Did three nights out in tents and climbed mt Washington with 102 mph winds. If your heading this way let me know.

Well, let’s see? Don answered the questions about the turntable and railroad. Yep, that was it, the Island Line Trail. The old Rutland Railroad. The peninsula out on to Lake Champlain was pretty neat. Burlington, Vermont has done a good job with trails and the shore line of Lake Champlain. That had to be a great train ride! When it ran. I think it shut down in 1962.

Yesterday, we traveled southwest down along eastern side of Lake Champlain. Crossed in to New York at Castle Rock. Easy to see how this was a strategic point during the English/French/and USA battles. Just gorgeous scenery. Crossed through the Appalachian Mountains on a 2 lane road. Kept coming upon glacial lakes and little villages, but very isolated on very good roads. Looks like big snow skiing areas. Last night and tonight we are in Fair Haven New York State Park on shores of Lake Ontario. Back to the Finger Lakes Live Steamers for the Labor Day Weekend and then headed home.

Trees were just beginning to change and should peak by the end of the month, across the Appalachians. Ready to get home for our own color festival and then cleaning up leaves, before heading south for the Winter. Got two great Ops sessions coming up at the Clarke’s.

Shawn and Ken,

Family is calling us back, so it looks like no visits this time.

I understand!

I don’t. Did I say that or just think it? Glad I didn’t hit post.

Ric just thinking of you about to install the Kadees on the Aristo passenger car I purchased from you, a real pleasure running trains with you at both Fred’s and Finger Lakes.

Body mounts, I hope, Steve…!!! See you later today at OVAR…

Looks good Steve!

Fred, we are still on the road. Plan to head home tomorrow for some OPs at Andy’s and catch up with hometown chores. Come about the first of November, we will be heading south.

Roger C. with Jim H’s help have really developed their car card waybill operations. As cars move from the pigeon holes to the tracks in the #1 gauge shed the perpetual ops session begins. You can operate, one person, outside and only 6 cars or whatever you take out are on the railroad. Their whole procedure is evolving very nicely.

They are establishing the same process for the 1 Inch ride on. It created a great Labor weekend. All is coming to an end, but (sigh) it should be cooler back home by the time we get there, Friday

We left the Finger Lakes Live Steamers, yesterday. Sitting in Ohio writing this and should make it home later today. Its been a great trip and we knocked four states off our bucket list, while seeing lots of neat railroad stuff. 2 operating weekends scheduled at the Clarke’s and then there are Friday nights on an Illinois Terminal HO layout owned by Mark Godwin.

Scheduled to be in the Carlyle area until the first of November. Fall is a great time of year, there.

So many of you have followed our saga of travels with constantly heading back home because of Jan’s Dad. He passed this morning with Jan by his side. No real sadness, he lived a long life, 98 years and almost 5 months. A proud man that his body finally betrayed him. He leaves 2 daughters with husbands, 3 grandchildren and 7 great grand children.

After all her work Jan can now say she is retired.

Not sure whether this is a time for sadness or relief. It is definitely a time for change. Its tough to lose a parent. My condolences to you both.

That didn’t come out near the way I wanted. I’m no good at this. I’m sorry, Ric.
