Large Scale Central

On the Road Again

Well, we are about to begin our travels for the Summer and had a little rude awakening with a phone call yesterday evening. This is Al at the campground and you have to be out of your campsite by 9pm this evening, power is being shut off and the lake is coming up. It was about 7:30 and we just happened to be home on a Friday night, because of the impacts of Tropical Storm Bill on our Normal Ops Friday Night. Federal Yard just outside of Alton was flooded and our Ops Host, MarkG, didn’t want AndyC to get his feet wet.

Always blessed with good things happening, we were close and got going on the tear down. Trailer is on the street in front of our house and I got the utility trailer home this morning with firewood, hose reel, kayaks and storage boxes all safe in the backyard.

Tomorrow after Father’s Day responsibilities in Carlyle, we head for Bloomington, Illinois and points north. We’ll be back home every couple of weeks, but the Finger Lakes, the Invasion and Boston are on the horizon. Great time of the year to get out of the heat of Southern Illinois and do some Operatin.

Oh yeah, the flooding at the Lake is somebody else’s problem. For the first time in along time, I just need to get to high ground and stay out of the way.

Happy trails!

Stay dry and I’ll see ya in couple of weeks up North…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Are you taking a locomotive with you while you are on the road?? Whenever we are traveling I always have a locomotive so that when I stop at someone’s who has a large scale railroad I can run my engine on it. Lots of fun.

Stay dry and safe travels. I hope to see you this summer. Let me know when your close by.

Ed,

We’ve been known to carry a couple pieces of gear. The KVRwy Track Maintenance and Mobile Switching Operations Team, tries to provide necessary equipment and personnel to carry out its mission of enjoyment.

Hey Shawn,

Thank you! We are going to spend an extended amount of time at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers, since we became full Family Members this year. We hope to visit Ken’s and maybe even Bruce’s, if we can work it out. All that will be decided at the Invasion. I’ll certainly hope we can work your new facility in to a visit. The campground on the Deleware River has become a great spot to stop.

Have fun, Ric!

I hear you folks in Southern Illinois really got hammered… My Grand daughter just bought a home inn Mascoutah and she’s really concerned about flooding… There’s a nice “little” creek behind her place that’s startin’ to rise…

Travel safe and greet the Northerners for us… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Sounds like you will be traveling “well prepared”, Ric. What is the campground you are referring to on the Delaware River??

Ed

It all but missed us here in Oklahoma!

Ric-

Glad to hear you vacated with no problems, and have a great adventure

Let me know if you get near Chesapeake Bay in MD, you could stop in and run a train.

I still hope to visit in Sept on the way to Marty’s if you are back to home territory

Jerry

Stan,

All the creeks and the river in the Kaskaskia Valley is pretty well flooded draining central Illinois of around 6 inches plus of water everywhere. Corn is really growing and the soy bean crop is going to struggle to even get in the ground. Hope all is okay with the kids. Is this Tracy or the younger girl?

Ed,

River Beach Campsites in Milford, Pa. Its near Shawn, V. Beautiful Valley!

Jerry,

Thanks for the invite, don’t know if we’ll get that far south this time of year.

Currently, we are in the Bloomington, Illinois area having the grandkids watch out for our well being.

June flew by as we traveled through the end of it. Spent the better part of a week in extreme southern Indian at the Lincoln State Park with the daughter’s family. Good family time and relaxation. This morning we are setup back in our local campground. The water is still very high and water side sites are all closed. Never forget, floods are bad, droughts are worse.

The 4th Weekend was spent at an Illinois Junior Rodeo Association event at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds as a support vehicle for one of our son’s daughter’s. She is improving her skills and becoming very competitive Cow Girl, so its fun to watch and assist. I apologize for being off the net to offer my congratulations to both Canada and the United States in the celebrations of their appropriate birthdays. I hope all had a great safe celebration. You all were in my thoughts.

Looks like we head north and east on Thursday, after a little homefront regrouping. We’ve got a few family responsibilities with the parents and then we are off. Need to repack with train and traveling equipment.

The heat is here, so it is time to get to cooler climates. Looking forward to seeing many of you on our annual trek north. All is well.

Safe travels - Let us know if Northern NJ is in your travel plans and we’ll try and meet you there. Not going to make TrainOps this year.

Ric, I think I recall that campground. Isn’t it right on the river, and they do a lot of canoeing on the Delaware from the campground?? As I recall the sites are nice and shady for the hot summer weather!!

Ed

Ed,

Yes, that is the place. Hard to imagine its the same river down by Ken Brunt’s below Philadelphia. Lot better for kayaks.

We were scheduled to leave today for the Finger Lakes Live Steamers, but Jan’s Dad has really gone and it looks like we are on a Death Watch. We will reevaluate on Monday or Tuesday. He was 98 last April 1st, so he’s had a long run. To bring train stuff in to the story, he used to ride the Southern from downtown St. Louis out to Bartelso, Illinois, which is about 12 miles south west of us. And then take a horse and buggy out to the farm. Also rode the traction engines up the lane road for the threshing. Born 1917. Served both in World War II and the Korean War and never left Missouri. He obtained the rank of Command Sergeant Major of the hospital at Ft. Leonard Wood, in the Korean War. He was a Special Agent for USFG, an insurance underwriter, for 43 years. Proud Man, but not much left of him.

Please give Jan my sympathy.

My sympathies as well. Time and the world can be rough on a body, but he sure sounds like he made the most of it, and fared well. After all he has loving children there for him.

Its tough to lose a parent. It makes real our own mortality. My sympathies for both you and Jan. I’ll keep him in my prayers.
