My wife Marilyn just presented me with 2 10 inch records made by the Railway Labor Executives Association (AFL-CIO) titled “The Railroad Worker and His Songs”. This is a one hour radio program put together by the RLEA that features an introduction by the RLEA Chairman G.E. Leighty and AFL-CIO President, George Meany. The narrative definitely takes the union slant, but it is interesting and the songs are nicely done by the Merrill Jay Singers. The set is in the original packaging for shipment by mail to radio stations.
Marilyn’s grandfather was an executive in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. This was probably his personal copy. It was found when cleaning out her mother’s house and nearly went into the dumpster :o
As a bonus - Marilyn had the records recorded on CD so I don’t have to risk damaging the fragile originals to listen to them. And now that they are on CD, ripping them to MP3’s would not be too hard.
Can anyone date this based on George Meany’s era the AFL-CIO? Or perhaps the name G.E. Leighty is recognized by someone?
There is a similar set for sale (not by me) on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/1961-RLEA-Railroad-Worker-Songs-10-LP-Records-Set_W0QQitemZ180096740765QQcmdZViewItem if you’d like to see pictures.
Anyone interested in downloadable MP3’s ?
