Get out much, Cliff? That’s amazing stuff. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Thanks Steve, haha! Glad you like the list, and feel free to add more.

I tumbled onto that site after searching for “American Hoist and Derrick Company,” and lo and behold, this site had their catalogs. So I kept poking around there, using other search terms, and came up with a few more links – though I’ve by no means thoroughly looked through them. Then I had to go to dinner. Gee thanks cliff all I need is more inspiration. I love log loaders. I can’t wait to poke around that catalog for sure but that entire list and site is a good find

Devon…Aren’t you supposed to be building a railroad?

I think I can squeeze in sometime to read.

This catalog is a fun one, if you’re into coal mining, and you can find a copy

there are “Car-Builders Dictionaries” for several Vintages available on Google books. The link is for 1909, I also have used the 1895 version for my coach project. not only does it have basic and detailed car building drawings but it has a catalog of accessories, from brakes and wheels to window latches and heaters. both passenger and freight equipment as well as electric railway equipment.

there are thousands of clear drawings!

Cliff,

I have only just begun to dive into those catalogs and wow there is a ton of very cool stuff and pictures in them. It is a modelers treasure trove. I know have my idea for my MOW work crane. the drawings are very details.

As Eric said google books has a plethora of books on railroad operation, building etc.

Darryl Huffman (sells on ebay) Has a large selection of old catalogs he has loaded to discs and sells the discs.

I have several of his equipment ones. I take them over to KInkos or Staples and have them printed and bound

makes for easier use on the work bench.

I agree Devon, I’ve barely begun on them myself. I really enjoyed the Am Hoist catalogs, they offered so many kinds of interesting derricks and the winches to operate them.

Here’s a catalog of a tank manufacturer, for the next time you need to mix up a big batch of cyanide.

This is fun, a catalog of mainly ore cars – all sizes and shapes and modus operandi.

P58-59 & 100-103 show push cars, with nice views of the workings. P97 has ortho drawing views of a typical steel cart. P70 has a car very like the Bachmann side-tip ore car.

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.31822038209243

Mill machinery, incl. stamps, grizzlies, crushers, etc.

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.31822038209292

This one (c. 1894) also has a lot for mines themselves, including the hoists and pumps. Now we’re talkin’. P26 shows a great cross-section of a Cornish pump, which was used a lot on the Comstock. This amazing setup required YUGE engines, and often multiple counterbalance rockers at various levels of the shaft (to take the weight of the pumping beams). See P27 for such “bobs”. Gold milling equipment starts on P34.

Maybe this is one of Darryl’s disks? Not sure. I’ve been looking for info on a particular donkey I’m interested in, so I hope it covers that. The catalog (1925) sells for 50-250 +S&H used, and I’d rather have the electronic version any for CAD tracing purposes(if there are orthographic views). Anyway, for $11 incl S&H, this is a pretty good deal (that is, if not available scanned & free by one of the libraries).

Bob, I looked for that coal mining equipment book as scanned / free (I’m sure you have as well), but couldn’t find it. There’s a copy on Amazon though,

Eric yes, I love those! I have the 1888 version. Wonderful resource.

===>Cliffy

Cliff,

I don’t think that is one of D.H’s discs.

I have a copy of the 1925 catalog, which engine are you looking for?

Rick

I have the disk on order, but thanks for asking Rick. It’s this one.

http://sierraloggingmuseum.org/outdoor-exhibits/willamette-donkey-no1233/

It’s near my sister’s place in CA, and I’ll have an opportunity next October to see it and take decent pics and measurements for a future modeling effort.

Anyone know of a decent donkey engine or two somewhere in or near Maryland?

Cliff

Closest place I can think of would be Cass.

There’s also one out in the Redding, CA train station…if you want to drive that far…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Thanks for the ideas Ken. Cass is a little closer, but still a trip…

I saw this demo of a working steam hoist at Rough and Tumble,

http://www.roughandtumble.org/

That place is up near me. I was there a few years ago.
