Large Scale Central

Old #49

Well, since Uncle Pete (UPRR) saw fit to lay me off for a little while, I’ve been making use of my time wisely. I started with a Kalamazoo 4-4-0 locomotive that I recently acquired, and decided that I wanted it to look a little more like a model than a toy.

This is what it looked like. It didn’t come with a tender, but I was lucky enough to have an old Bachmann tender to use for this project. I also recently got a Unimat lathe, so I turned an air compressor, dynamo, number plate, steam dome and brake stand for my little project.

And this is how it turned out. No decals as yet, I just photo shopped them in to give you an idea of what it’ll look like when completed.

This was a run project. Next up, a caboose!

Very nice re-do!

Good work Bill, looks a lot better than when it left here! You really got back into the trains, lathe and all.

Hi William:

Excellent job. You can also buy a replacement cowcatcher from Phil at HLW. The new cowcatcher has see through ribs and a link and pin push bar. This one item replaced would greatly increase the scale appearance of your model.

Do you have the 2-4-2 Bachmann red loco that goes with that Bachmann tender?

Norman

Thanks Jerry, I’m having fun, no doubt about it! Thank you all for the nice comments.

Norman, you can actually see thru the pieces on the pilot. But, a new one would look nice, too! As as for the 2-4-2, it was missing some parts, so was sent back to Bachmann in trade for the current 2-4-2T.

Must be something in the clean Nebraska air that makes good modelers. Between Bill & Jerry there’s a lot of inspiring modeling going on. Nice job Bill.
Dave

Thanks Dave! Going to make a nice addition to my roster. Now I have the Forney I got from you, the new B’mann 2-4-2T and the American, so I’m pretty well set for power, now just working on some rolling stock so they’ll have something to pull around!!

William; Beautiful locomotive! It takes some tweaking, but you can make the Kadee kit for the LGB 2-6-0 and the Bachmann 4-6-0 fit the Kalamazoo/HLW locomotives.

Best, David Meashey

The “after” pic sure looks a lot better than the “before”!

Thanks Ray and Dave. And thanks for the coupler advice, Dave, that is going to be my next modification to ol’ 49. I still have to add some coal, which of course will be authentic Powder River basin coal.

That looks much better. John gave me one of those engines. I have been doing the same to it. have it all painted just have to add details and hook up my critter control to the tender. Its going to battery power.

Yes, mine will also be battery operated. Already have the electric speed controller and receiver part of the equation, just need to add a battery and figure out how to open the motor block to remove the original electrical pickups, and wire in the new controller. That is part of thre wonderful world of model railroading, you’re never really done!!
