  1. jim rowson

2, greg hile

  1. john radder
  1. Joe Bussing
  2. Dan Hilyer
  3. Jim Rowson
  1. Joe Bussing

  2. Greg Hile

  3. Eric Schade

  1. Joe Bussing

2.Dan Hilyer

3.Jim Rowson

It is tempting to vote for the “Mik just Mik” flatcar but I guess I will pick:

1st - Joe Bussing - Jett Rink Cable Drill Rig

2nd - Gregory Hile - Equine BBQ Smokehouse and Livery Stable

3rd - John Passaro - “Chutes and Ladders” Stairways

HM: Todd Haskins, Dan Hilyer, Jim Rowson

and of course Eric Schade should have his own category of museum quality art.

Clearly the toughest competition / voting year ever.

All the entrants we’re outstanding this year, hard to vote but here we go…

  1. Joe Bussing

  2. Jim Rowson

  3. Todd Haskins

Great job everyone.

most models shown i would gladly integrate into my layout!

meaning, the overall quality of the modelers here is getting from better to best! (next year to bestest?)

to voting… if one of my own models does not fit, i throw it into the “for future projects” parts bin. so one of the finest works won’t get my vote.

the “Nero” project, is something in its own right. like was my burning of an indian village, when i was about ten. my bottom meeting a belt was not for the tents, but for the burnt peachpine floor…

so, memorable, but the “pre-disaster” stable did not light my candles. (just it’s own!)

so,

3rd: Dan Hyler’s sturdy Cookkhouse. a spot on model of rural company buildings of that time. with some weathering, but not too much.

2nd: Joe Bussing’s Drilling Rig. it is a “Whoa!” building in many aspects. parts fitting perfectly, well researched and executed details, and, and…

1st: Jim Rowson’s stilt huts. just because it was love on first sight. his assembly of huts does not just look right, but it “feels” right. (can’t explain that any better)

  1. Greg Hile

  2. Jim Rowsen

  3. Devon

  4. (I know there’s no 4th) Joe Bussing

Really hard to pick and the order was tough, excellent guys!

Man, this is so hard. All the builds were really good and varied. We have mining structures, tunnel portals, an oil derrick, a bridge, power house, turntable, cookhouse, cliff dwellings, coal tipple, freight dock, stairways and ladders, yard office, and a burnt building which I bet is a first. Oh, and let’s not forget the strongest flat car ever constructed. I probably left one or two out. How does one choose?

Since I have to make a decision, here goes:

  1. Joe Bussing

  2. Gregory Hile

  3. Eric Schade

  1. Jim Rowson

  2. Joe Bussing

  3. Dan Hilyer

Honorable mention to Devon for getting that far with half his brain on the fritz.

  1. Jim Rowson

  2. Joe Bussing

  3. Greg Hile

As always they were all great models and enjoyed watching them in the process

Thanks guys for your partisipation

Jim Rowson

Dan Hilyer

Joe Bussing

Two many criteria running around in my head as to how I should choose, so I put my favorites in a hat and drew 3…

1 - Joe Bussings Oil Rig - Great subject with amazing detail

2 - Eric Schade - I still think he photo-shopped the real one into his pictures :0

3 - John Passaro - I wish I lived in Denver so I could be near my kids & grand kids, but also so I could get John to mentor me on color.

Honorable mention to everyone who posted a log no matter how far they got. I expect every sigle one would take a Rule #1 Compliance award!

If this were the Olympics there would be hundredths of a point separating the top four or five builds, and just to think we lost two or three of our better modellers to illnesses…every year this Challenge gets better, to the point now where it’s gotten impossible to find a favorite (and to think I emailed one of the fellas concerned the Challenge wouldn’t get off the ground this year after a slow start; boy was I wrong.)

Here’s where I’m at after changing my mind a dozen times.

1st. I can’t get past the multi-skills, the detailed craftsmanship, and realism of Eric Schade’s turntable, not to mention the perfect coloring. This guy’s down to complaining about how the turnbuckle threads aren’t exactly right. Okay, then. Well done.

2nd. Joe Bussing. What put me over the top was this man made, from scratch, the winch for the bailer and the bull wheel so faithful to detail that I’m amazed. The scope and size of this build alone is awesome, then you have all these patiently hand-crafted finishing details. Awesome.

3rd. Todd Haskins’s coal tipple is perfect. Couldn’t possibly be improved on. And he said, “…the coal chute mechanism. It is totally fudged from odd parts and non working but I think it conveys the idea of what it is supposed to do.” Yeah, no kidding. Aside from the finish level, the red was a brilliant touch.

There has to be a creativity award, I mean, c’mon now, Gregory Hile built a perfectly acceptable building and burned it down. We all know John Allen had a burnt building on his layout and did his mirror trick thing on it, and a lot of public layouts have a “burning” forest or building, but no one in the Challenge ever set fire to his Challenge build!

First-Timer Award (I think we are still awarding that, aren’t we, Dave?) goes to Jim Rowson. His build has the most character and visual interest of any of the builds, I think. Even one of the old Soviet figure skating judges couldn’t come up with enough points to knock Jim’s build out of best build by a first-timer.

And finally, I’m giving myself an Honorary Mention! Yes, I am! I set out to make progress with some good work on one of the areas of my layout, and I did. So there.

And the votes from Hawai’i…

  1. Joe Bussig - Wow. Just wow…
  2. Jim Rowson - Whimsy, realism, craftsmanship, and artistry! In my mind, a perfect combination of hobbyist and purist! Joe’s oil rig just edged this out, but only just.
  3. Jon Radder - That photo of a big steamer coming from the portal literally took my breath away! HUZZAH!

My “Honorable Mention” goes to Vic Smith, who brilliantly showed me what is possible within my resource (and talent!) constraints!

Mahalo nui loa (thanks plenty!) to all for sharing their passion and their skills. It inspired the whole clan!

Aloha,

Eric

Wow, what an impressive bunch of entries! I wanted to join the challenge but it just didn’t work out and now I’m kind of glad I didn’t as I don’t think I could match the quality! Choosing my votes is no easy feat as they all have great qualities.

#1 Joe Bussing

#2 Jim Rowson

#3 Dan Hilyer

Honorable Mention- to all the others because every one had something I liked!

Spirit of Mik- Eric Mueller, I know it isn’t finished but to me this is so Mik. Eric used what he had available with the few tools available and put together something that will work good and look good on his RR. I used to chat with Mik quite a bit and I just see so much of Mik in this build.

Steve

You Guys ALL made this tough this year to vote. I wish I could have joined you guys. Next Year!.. Everyone did a outstanding job!!

Here are my votes…

1st… Joe Bussing…Oil Well

2nd… Todd Haskins…Coal Tipple.

3rd… Dan Hiler…Cook House

Little surprised there’s no love for Dave Taylor’s power house. He’s obviously up against stiff competition, but it’s hard to acknowledge this one as an “also-ran” in the build challenge. If there’s an “honorable mention” category, the power house would have to be mentioned. It’s just like being there…
