Official VOTING for Mik's Build Challenge 2017

Chris Kieffer said:

3rd Place - Pete Lassen, as a first timer myself, I know how daunting competing in this challenge is. Plus come on, it was Beer, Fire, Meat and Cars…If he had put Dancing Girls in there it would have been Grand Champion!

Yep that was it. The more bourbon I consume the less pious I become and realize the only thing missing from Pete’s build is a pole.

Well, first off the whole first challenge was so much fun, I actually enjoyed all the encouragement, comments and suggestions from everyone I feel like I made a lot of friends and now to figure out who to vote for and who to leave out is very difficult, if not impossible. So many different ways to look at these , its hard to pick.

First Dave Taylor, your building should be in the running , just because you make the stones is not a reason to be excluded, my opinion. so, you get the award for creative use of stones, most different cuts, I would have never thought to cut them in the many ways you did.

#4 Travis Dague and David Maynard get the “life gets in the way of fun” award for best not quite finished , but we love where things are going and cannot wait to see them finished.

#3.1 Devon, just being so different from all the other builds deserves a lot of credit, I really have all of these tied for top spot

Now on to the difficult ones

#3… what do I do enny meeny miney mo? rock paper, scissors? The pressure! type in a name then erase it and try again, only to erase again.

Chris Kieffer. Best first time build, great looking building, I would love to have one like it.

#2 John Passaro, great use of a lot of different materials and techniques to build a brick, stone, stucco and Taylor Block building with all the detail inside.

#1 I cannot decide, but I have too, so…

Dan Hilyer, the square water tank, after looking at the pictures over and over, the last picture in your official photos , it looks so real I have to give your build the top spot.

Congrats to all, without sounding like a participation award , I think ALL the builds were very well done, I would love to have any one of them to display.

My vote

1st Eric Shade … the Ray of 7/8th scale

2nd to my buddy Devon … nice! Now get to work on the outdoor layout!

3rd to John Passaro …Love it!

4th Vic …very nice…(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Here are my votes -

#1 Eric Schade. The attention to detail and fine woodworking (yes even in 7/8 it’s still fine) is outstanding.

#2 John Passaro. John uses his art experience to do an awesome job painting and detailing this beautiful building.

#3 John Caughney. Even though unfinished, John used the stone in unique ways, on angles and as cap stones.

Many thanks to Dave Taylor for keeping this tradition alive. You would make Mik proud.

My top 3;

  1. John P, Devon, Eric, and Homebody Chris Kieffer (in any order).

Honorable mention to Pete, Matt and Travis.

Watch for the second section of this train, from wedding bells to a bank! and watermations and mebbe I’ll complete something this time!

Thanks Mik.

John

What a great challenge it was and as usual the entrants showed off their skills to come up with amazing builds such as Eric S and Dave T’s outstanding structures.

We had structures from BBQ joints to Pretzels to wine, baked goods and a place to enjoy it all in “The Lamb and Clover” Irish Pub and another place in Todd’s Gallows if things got way out of hand.

It just goes to show that we are a thirsty hungry bunch.

It was tough to decide on the best of the best but here goes.

#1 John Passaro He took a hodgepodge of materials and married them together so well in his engine barn.

#2 Devon Sinsley It was interesting to see how his snowshed developed into such a unique structure that is seldom modeled.

#3 Todd Brody for his downright crazy Gallows.

The Spirit of Mik award should go to Lou Luczu for his Pretzel Hut.

Well done to all and for those that did not finish keep up the good work and keep us posted.

Yet another year of great builds.
It gets more difficult every year which builds to pick as the standard just keeps getting higher.
My picks:

1st: Devon Sinsley
2nd: Dan Hilyer
3rd: Chris Kieffer

1…Matt Kirichock …Winery …It jumps out at me. I really like the loading dock shots. It just looks active and alive. The structure tucked up against a wall is different as well.

2…Eric Schade…Library …seriously capturing the flavor of the 1:1 structure. I love his attention to details when modeling like they build on a 1:1 scale.

3…John Passaro…engine house the mix of stone work ,weathering and different details make this unique structure work.

They were all “fantastic” finished or not. I wish a few others were finished as it may have changed my decisions.

I also think some of you guys have a Rooster fetish. You can get professional counseling for that issue.

Also have to mention Todd Haskins (washer/dryer) picture would have gotten Miks vote.

OK, Roos, I cannot find any washer/dryer picture. Please post.

Rooster, How about working on my Wife’s glass top oven/stove… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Thankyew

I had a lot of fun on the build and with the challenge in general. The quality and variety of builds is top notch and I would love to put any of these structures on the Tortoise & Lizard Bash. Most all of them would fit right in. (Though way cool, Eric’s library would be too large. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif))

  1. Jon Passaro for his most excellent engine house.

  2. Chris Kieffer for his beautiful bakery. (Would love to put this one on my railroad if you would part with it.)

  3. Todd Brody for his gallows humor.

I have to go with:

  1. John Passero’s Engine house

  2. Dan Hilyer’s Water tank

  3. Chris Kieffer’s bakery

all were top notch this year including the ones that didn’t get finished. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

But that leaves us with a good bit to look forward to. A far cry above the humble piece it together from the junk box beginnings that it started from

MIK is (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)upon us all…

David M.,

I have thought about this. Not really being a part of the good old days and not at all know Mik I wonder if we haven’t lost the spirit. I was attracted to this challenge when it resided at MLS and when I finally got into Large Scale and found out the challenge moved here I came to participate. I loved the junk box mentality of it all. But on the other hand I also like what it has become. $30 buck limit is still pretty junk boxy and with Dave supplying the basic starting point it is fun to see what we all come up with. Its a conundrum for sure. I think both have there merits. Most of all with MIK in mind its about having fun and I know I for one have fun.

My vote is:

1st - Eric Schade

2nd - John Passero

3rd - Chris Kieffer

It is very hard to choose because they are all good. It is interesting how much talent is in our hobby.

All great models, great ideas, all are worthy of prizes, but we are all old enough to know that not everybody wins.

1st Chris Kieffer

2nd John Passaro

3rd Eric Schade

Sorry Todd, I’m pretty sure it won’t even make it on my layout. Wife has just laid complete claim to it, so I am going to have to build a second one for myself.

Thanks Chris:

BTW, I have a standing offer. I will buy any of the completed entries for twice what they claim to have spent on their structure. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
