I thought the other hobby list hasn’t been tagged recently when I came across this web page today. Then I thought how often have you realised a museum is there because the collector needed more space for their collections? … Or isn’t this is a pleasant surprise?
Then of course it reminded me that in our travels, we have, at times found museums we just did not want to enjoy, but did. Here are our top 3….
Speelklok Museum — Utrecht, Netherlands
The Speelklok Museum is devoted to self-playing musical instruments, including music boxes, mechanical clocks, barrel organs, orchestrions, and automated pianos. A key feature of the museum is that many instruments are still operational and demonstrated to visitors, making it as much an auditory experience as a visual one. The museum focuses on the history, engineering, and cultural role of automated music from the 17th century to the early 20th century. Located in a former church its thick walls and soundproofed double glazed windows allow rock concert sound as it was meant to be.
Bata Shoe Museum — Toronto, Canada
The Bata Shoe Museum houses one of the world’s most significant collections of footwear and shoe-related artifacts, spanning roughly 4,500 years of history. Its collection ranges from ancient and traditional footwear to modern fashion and celebrity shoes. The museum explores how shoes reflect culture, identity, technology, and social status, combining anthropology, design, and fashion history. Rooster, you and Cliff definitely put this one on your lists.
USS Midway Museum — San Diego, California, USA
The USS Midway Museum is a historical naval aviation museum located on the USS Midway (CV-41) aircraft carrier at Navy Pier on San Diego Bay. Open since 2004, it preserves this large post-World War II carrier with an extensive collection of restored aircraft and exhibits related to naval aviation history. Visitors can explore multiple decks of the ship, see aircraft displays, and learn about the lives of the sailors and aviators who served aboard. We definitely felt the need for speed!
What museum have you been dragged to… and enjoyed?
