NYC Jet Car M497 help

A friend of mine wants to make one of these, I recall someone did it a few years back but can’t seem to find it. Anyone have any ideas of who made the model from and Aristo RDC?

AndyC has a book on RDC’s and there is a whole chapter on the jet experiment. There is also quite a bit of info online.

Jerry, if he does this, I hope he does it jet powered. Should be an interesting addition to a live steam stable of equipment. Probably needs extra weight down low and wide radius turns to stay on the track.

Please keep us informed about the progress.

Google just found me LOTS of pictures, including some models.

Hmm. As a railway loco, it seems a little impractical. Jets use a LOT of energy for the work they do, so we use them when we need a lightweight, simple engine on something that goes fast. Of course, in a locomotive, light weight isn’t usually a prime concern.

Here’s a video of the thing in it’s experimental run…

…visions of two of those old "Jetex "rocket engines being mounted on the roof of an Aristo Bud Car…by gar I am old…!!

Seems to me, someone modeled that and displayed it at a modeling contest… Not sure which show it was, tho…

For an 8mm railfan video, that was pretty well done. They kept the loco in the frame and didn’t jiggle the camera too much. Too bad there was no sound though. I doubt anyone living near the tracks would be happy about having that thing going by.

That thing really hauls! It looks like something Jules Verne would envision.

Powered by two surplus JP-49 jet engines from a B-36. That’s even the nacelle from the B-36, I think.

Steve, That engine pod w/the two JP-49 was pretty much identical to that used on the B-47 inboard set also.

A gentleman had a model of one in the model contest at the ECLSTS a few years back (maybe 2). I was one of the judges for that contest, so I could say some good and some bad about his model. Unfortunately I do not know his name.

Tom Ball of the Pine Needle railroad built one a couple of years ago. did a great job.
