NY TRAIN ACCIDENT

New York train crash: Three DEAD after train bound for Manhattan collides with vehicle.

The crash occurred after a Long Island Rail train struck a vehicle on its way to Manhattan at 7.00pm local time (12.00am GMT). Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder speculated that the vehicle had tried to beat the train at the crossing. All three occupants of the vehicle died.

Train stuck in snow.

Why do they always put it so it sounds like the train is at fault for hitting the defenseless car?

Why can’t they put “idiots ignore train signals and dangers of leaving car on railroad crossing”?

Perhaps the gene pool is a tiny bit less polluted?

(bad greg bad greg, not politically correct at all!)

Greg

One hundred % agree with you Greg! As an engineer I see/hear this all the time. (Didn’t you see me… why didn’t you stop before hitting us. etc) seriously what is wrong with people. Like we can swerve or stop on a dime.

I’m going to sound like an old fogey, but when I was in school on the “tall swings”, if we jumped out of the swing and broke an arm, we did not sue the school.

Likewise, we were educated that a train was very big and could not stop as quick as a car.

Seems that this kind of common sense has left the planet.

Greg

Well Greg that would be judgemental and rather harsh on the families of the 3 dumbasses I mean victims of this “accident”.

I agree common sense has left and judging by the political climate it is getting higher on the food chain than what us mere working stiffs have to deal with on a day to day basis

FWIW, the latest report says the car was running from the scene of an accident just moments before it tried going around the gates (which have been verified as having been functioning properly).

I think that’s what’s referred to as “Instant Karma”.

I used to live near this station in Westbury NY.

It’s the “Darwin Theory” at work…it also includes those people trespassing on railroad property and wearing “Noise phones” on their ears.

Our only problem is that “They” are breeding faster than they can kill themselves off.

Some people will probably consider this observation, cruel, and un-caring, but it basically describes what Darwin suggested, in his theory of evolution…

True; some are suicides, often done to appear as accidents so families won’t loose out on insurance policies, but that is what is wrong with our World today…always trying to rest the blame on something/somebody else so that someone else pays the price.

Officials in the transport industry are constantly trying to educate, and solve this problem of “Death by train”. So far, nothing really works, short of putting everyone on a leash, and leading them away from their own disaster.

The big question is; who would be willing, or qualified, to hold the control end of the leash.

Fred Mills

…as a mater of trivia; some may be interested in an experiment I have made, about a dozen times in about a half dozen, different locations.

I positioned myself on a lawn chair; at a safe distance, from a VERY active railroad track (Off railroad property). Close enough to the track so that I should have been able to hear any warning bells or horns (Usually very close to a railroad crossing, with no bell or gates)

I sat there, not looking either way along the tracks.

I was VERY surprised how many times I didn’t hear the horn, until the train was almost on top of me…and my ears were not blocked by noise making gizmos.

Wind, and ambient noise can hide the warnings, and if you are in an automobile with the radio on, you are just asking for trouble.

Greg;

“Common Sense” died years ago, and no-body attended the funeral, because CS didn’t play the “Politically correct” game, to the satisfaction of Religious Leaders, or Politicians.

Dang, that was brutal,

WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) — Two commuter trains traveling in opposite directions collided with a vehicle on the tracks in Westbury, killing all three occupants in the vehicle before one of the trains derailed and tore into a concrete platform Tuesday night, according to officials.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the vehicle was “trying to beat the gate” when it was struck just before 7:30 p.m. He said one of the trains, which was carrying about 200 passengers and headed for Manhattan, was going at “full speed” when it crashed.

“The train then leaves the track and takes out the platform and the hits the north side of the platform and takes off about 30 yards of concrete, which goes through the train,” Ryder said.

It constantly amazes me how so many people suddenly get so stupid when they come to a railroad crossing.

The crash took place just eight days after an Eyewitness News investigation showed how motorists often ignore the bells and flashing lights and try to beat the LIRR crossing gates, with some crashing right through them.

All because of stupidity and common sense. Three Lives and probably upward of a million or so in damages. -shakes head-

And the down side is the family’s will sue. Just can’t fix stupid. Later RJD

Why do we cal uncommon wisdom “common sense”?

Why don’t we call things “common stupidity”?

Greg, the big bad train was being mean to beat up on that poor little car. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)Seriously, the headline that implies the train is at fault gets more ratings, and it all about the money.

The argument I heard, when I was a truck driver, is that trucks have bigger breaks, so they should be able to stop faster. Train breaks are even bigger, so… I guess the concept of inertia and friction just never sank into the heads of some people.

I see people stop on the tracks all the time. And I get all tense waiting for the traffic light to turn green, so the moron who stopped on the tracks can get out of the danger zone.

Who gives “Trucks” bigger BREAKS…I think you must mean “BRAKES”…there is a great difference between Breaks and Brakes…

Fred Mills

Please give me a break, and not get upset over my trying to correct your spelling…or next time I’ll put on my brakes and not run into a tree…!!

I don’t run railroad crossings.

In fact, if I see a train coming, I pull over and stop so I can be first in line while the train goes by. Listening to the Burlington Northern coal trains and the Union Pacific freight trains makes me happy.

I don’t even pull up to the line, had a derailed car go by 1 time when stopped and the chucks of tie/sleeper being thrown off broke a window in a car in front of me

It’s not your job to correct our friends. It is your job to be nicer… like the Golden Rule

Ah, ats Fred. So I don’t spell so good. Its difficult when the letters keep moving around on me.
