NT/OT Geeking out Big Time - Star Wars Ralph McQuarrie concept X

Someone once told me regarding kit modeling: discover resin and all your dreams will come true I’m realizing he was right! Found this on Ebay, being sold by a bloke in NYC, its a resin 1/72 scale kit based on Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept paintings for Star Wars, got it put together, still need painting, and wow its a great looking model. This is a kit I have been looking for since 1977.

I have been hesitant to try resin kits, I have make a few Herb Deeks resin kits, but they were relatively easy kits, this was a bit more complicated requiring some drilling, puttying, and such, but it went together far better than I expected. I have heard real horror stories regarding resin kits, luckily this one wasnt one of them. I actually had to make a choice buying this, it was either this or a rare resin Space 1999 Hawk (another one of those ‘must have’) kit that was up at the same time, but I decided this was far more unique and desirable to me. Glad I did.

Cool! Congrats on realizing a dream!

That nice looking resin kit ya built there Vic

Just leave the aluminum spraypaint in the drawer on this one… ok?

Oh, and interesting model, too.

Victor,

Are you reffering to the Space 1999 kits from Replicas Unlimited? They require a little work in some areas but are simply amazing! I still have an older 1/72 Eagle kit going to ebay this weekend to help fund my recent purchace of a Replicas Unlimited Eagle kit. These bad boys are just shy of 2 ft compared to the commercial kits at 12". After seeing one a friend of mine built I had to get one of my own! It has not arrived yet and I’m already thinking of ordering the matching scale Hawk.

Love your X-wing.

Edit: The RU kits are not cheap, but not too bad either. I paid $200 for the Eagle and I think the Hawk comes in around $150. Of course by the time you add turned aluminum bells and a few other upgrades in gets to be a bit more. Check out their site.

Mark, the Hawk wasn’t from RE, it was a smaller 12" sized garage kit that was about $40. I would love to get a Warp kit but the price keeps me away…at least for now.

BTW, I just read in the news that Star Wars designer Ralph McQuarrie has passed away at the age of 82:

Ray that’s too bad. Amazing how close his original paintings were to the finished films. He also did Battlestar Galactica

Speaking of the Space 1999 Hawk and seeing what prices are going for those things now, it makes me sick to think that I sold my 2 1/2 foot EAGLE 1 SPACESHIP made by Mattel in 1976 that held the 3" figures for $15.00 at a garage sale a few years ago. At least I still have my 1970’s Mattel Motorific set, 1960’s 12" GI-Joe’s and Original 12" 1970’s Star Wars Figures.

The average prices of the MPC/AMT plastic kits on Ebay lately one might as well buy the resin Warp kit. Its dang near the same price. I am slowly picking up a few other “mementos” of my much younger self. Luckily it is a short list.

As a couple of people have mentioned the Space 1999 eagle I do not feel I am completely hijacking the thread… Guess what came today? The quality of the castings are truly AMAZING! And BIG!

Is that the Warp kit? geez louiez its huge!!!

edit: Just realized thats the RE kit you mentioned…I would be in deep Bantha-pudu if I bought that

BTW that smaller resin Hawk kit came back onto Ebay, sooooooo…where is that mailman!

You bought it eh? Post some picks when you get it!

Box arrived today… oooow!

Resin knock-off kit, but what the heck, it was ½ the going price of the old AMT kit

…and you know NONE of those kits will ever get built, they’ll just end up gathering dust on a shelf somewhere, and I won’t have to listen to the collector screamers “What? You OPENED the Box??? You BUILT IT!!! AAAAAK! OMG The HORROR!!!..” :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey Mark

Were you aware this site existed? Neither did I…

:open_mouth:

Neat site Victor…Appears as if they limit your visits unless you sign up. Seems unfriendly? Cool stuff though!

Yeah but I think I’ll sign up, I came across some large format pics on the site that showed the original production model, that will be a massive help detailing the Hawk

I wish I could get a couple hot days so I can spray the X-wing, as I have to do that outside… rain this weekend.

You may find this helpfull…

Thanks I’ve been there, I like those kits, if it was still in production I think this might be the next model I would tempted by:
