FYI
Ken Burns 7 part documentary on WW2 “The War” begins this Sunday 9/23/07, check your local PBS station. If this new series is half as good as the Civil War or Baseball documentaries, it should be a real event.

From what I’ve read about it, he was anxious to get this film done as there aren’t that many WWII survivors left.
Thanx for the heads up on when it’s showing…
Hope you caught it, as it started last night …
1st episode was far more graphic with the images than I expected, but then theirs no other way to really tell the story and convey the horror of war. Hope the psycho-parents groups dont raise a stink about that.

or maybe they’ll look at their parents and/or grandparents with a new found respect for what they had to live through.
I remain amazed at what that those guys did, stepping into the lions jaws daily, and shocked by how many casualties there were in the various battles, thats still a subject not explained well on other documentaries. I just really dont know if at that age I could climb into the belly turret of a B17 or crawl thru a jungle on a South Pacific island.
It was also very interesting to see how many men remained behind in industrial jobs, at least that early in the war. There only up to 1943 so far. I was really dissapointed they didnt mention the Doolittle Raid, one of my favorite subjects of WW2.
My late father went ashore at Normandy. He survived that, thank God, or I wouldn’t be here.
My late uncle was a tail gunner on a B29. Also survived the war.
Another uncle was killed in Africa in his tank with Patton.
My mother and aunt survived the endless bombing of London by Hitler and his “buzz-bombs.”
I am a Viet Nam vet.
Years ago I used to watch war documentaries.
Now I can’t stand them.
I can’t believe the atrocities that occur during war. It isn’t human.
And I don’t think very many of the WWII vets left alive will watch it either.
No need to relive it again.
Just my opinion.

But then, if the story is retold in graphic detail, perhaps we won’t have to do it over again. “Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.”
But then, I am an optimist.

As long as we have greed history will repeat itself. The sad truth is that the greedy send the innocent to die so they can have their material wealth.
