NT/OT Facebook, is it worth it?

A bit off subject but I need some feedback. I opened an account on Facebook a couple months ago, mostly because alot of news sites now require a Facebook account to participate in the discussion comments but recently a couple friends and family members noticed I was there. But now my account has been locked and Facebook is expecting me to submit a picture ID and I am very reluctant to do so as I find it very invasive of my privacy re ID theft fears. I wouldn’t transmit my DL or Passport electronically to my bank let alone to Facebook. So I’m in a quandary, are the benefits worth it?

What are your feelings about it?

I’ve never been asked to submit a picture id. You are likely being spammed.

Even if it is true that you need a picture, why do you feel compelled to supply one of your actual self? Consider it like a dating site and just post a “fake” one. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

I sure don’t recall having to do that, but I also can’t remember much past a day or two…

However, there’s always an alternative. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

I don’t believe it is spam, I get the notice when I log in. They have done this from time to time, last was in 2013 and they had to apologize when it caused a huge stink. Now I think they do it in much smaller batches to avoid another stink. The problem is that I didn’t use my real bday or age when I signed up, very close to actual but again my ID concerns took precident. I don’t know how to inquire if this is from Facebook. They are giving instructions to cover up everything but my name picture and birthday but I still consider it incredibly invasive and a massive bother because I have to go thru alot of hassle to supply it.

Can you log on without it? If so, ignore it.

No Steve I’m locked out, they are in essence holding my account postage, which really pees me off. I’m still getting notifications but I cannot responded, even if I wanted to walk away I can’t access my account to delete it.

Weird,

I have never been asked for verification of any kind and I know many people who have made flase accounts for various reasons and they maintain them without verification as far as I know.

so give them notice to delete your account and its content, and be done with it.

if thinking a little, it should become clear, that facebook and similars are nothing else, but a tempting introduction drug to become a citizen of the brave new world.

I was on it a couple years ago. Got off, didn’t do anything for me. The wife just got on and they didn’t ask for a photo.

Don

Vic,

This sounds weird. I was on Facebook back in 2009-2012. Removed myself when I was bothered by some “relatives”. I rejoined FB just last year so I could see photos of my grandkids posted by my daughter and son-in-law. My son set-up my account with all kinds of security steps. He knows what to do. I have not been asked to provide a photo or to post anything. Good luck with trying to fix this if you are locked out. BTW, you are the first I have heard of, that CAN’T get into their account to either change settings OR to delete the account. I think you are or have been scammed somewhere along the line.

Somehow I got on Feces Book, and can’t seem to get off…If your Daughter wants to send you pictures, why bother with a third party…just have her get off her rump and send them to you…

I have often gone to the bottom of the feces Book page where it says “Unsubscribe”…but it won’t do anything. I have Googled to try to find out how to get rid of it, and it seems it is a real problem to unsubscribe…without great effort that I am not able to do.

You can delete you account Fred, but it doesn’t ‘really’ delete your account it just makes it inactive. I think after a period of time if you never reactivate your account (2-4 years?) it might get wiped.

To deactivate your account, log in to FB and open the settings page (under the triangle, where you log out). Under security settings you can edit the setting called “deactivate your account”.

Vic,

Sounds weird that you have to upload a photo. Pic a random pic online and upload that. See what happens. Lots of people have profile pictures that aren’t of themselves.

Google is full of answers to your question Vic. Me personally I’m a myface, spacebook Nazi …ain’t nothing but trouble as far as I’m concerned.

Did you sign on to a Facebook spoof site? It could happen.

Copied from the FB help page:

"We require everyone using Facebook to use their authentic name and birthday.
This way, you always know who you’re connecting with. When we discover accounts that look fake or like they’re using fake information,
we ask the owner to confirm they are who they say they are.

In most cases, the easiest way to confirm your identity is to follow the on-screen steps to enter your mobile phone number
and request a code.

If you can’t confirm your identity using your mobile number, you’ll need to provide a copy of your photo ID.
This can be a scanned copy or a close-up photo you’ve taken. Review the types of IDs we accept.

To learn about our policies, please visit the Facebook Community Standards."

Howver, having copied that, I have never sent them a photo of me, nor a mobile phone number, nor my correct birthday. I have no problems with my FB page.

Vic and all:

Question: What do you want to accomplish using FaceLift?

As discussed in my classes (college), what is there is there for eternity. Think of technology five years from now and the permanent availability of stored (public) data about you. Likely the largest users of media – high school and college students – are now reporting they wished they had not given out what has led to commercial contact with people they would have never met.

So back to the question, what do you want to accomplish that is not possible without storing your data and using this commercial service?

Your question to us is a big one.

Wendell

John yeah that’s the message I get when looking at the page I get redirected to when I log in.

Wendell, I’m on their primarily because some news sites require a Facebook account to participate in discussions. Also some family members found me but beyond them I haven’t done much. I think I got tagged because I haven’t sent out any friends requests besides to my wife. I guess that if you don’t send friends requests to hundreds of complete strangers they think your wierd or something.

“If your Daughter wants to send you pictures, why bother with a third party…just have her get off her rump and send them to you…”

NICE language Fred! Geeeeez.

It’s always been a source of amusement that people in the UK rejected the government idea of carrying ID cards … yet give away personal details to the world on Farcebook and Twatter and at the same time they wear ID badges for work

There is an old Yorkshire (UK county) saying “There’s 'nowt so queer as folk…”(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
