Large Scale Central

Not one, but TWO live-steam firsts today!

  1. I got to meet with Mr Bing Cheng of the Chinese end of AccuCraft [and others] at the Llanfair show this afternoon. What a delightful gentleman he is, to be sure. If you are reading this, Sir, it was a real privilege and pleasure to make your acquaintance.

  2. I got my hands on the Norfolk & Western J-Class. It is a total knockout stunner of a model in everything that I could see. It HAD been running, but sadly, I didn’t get the chance to see it in action. All I can tell you is that if you have the funds, and BIG powere floats your boat, you won’t be disappointed. Well, not until you try and find some cars to put ahint it, that is. The $9000+ UK price is a something of a downer though…

Here’s Cliff demonstrating it at the summer steamup…

Needless to say- it is now resplendent with full lettering and lining.

Tac ,

Seeing things like that make me feel the urge to sell all my electric power and make or buy more steam (we only have three , well , 2and a half really because I haven’t quite got my kit built Fowler steamed up yet )

I want one .

Either the Selkirk or the J are going to need 5m radius tracks at least, to avoid looking stupid, plus there’s the little matter of cars…my Hudson will have seven to begin with, but really needs at least twelve to make a convincing prairie wanderer. Back over in INT Dick Abbott and the boys regulalry haul a twenty-car consist with a Hudson…

Alan Wright makes Grove cars to suit - I have one - and Mr Leech over in BC has made many suitable cars. Accucraft is about to deliver their frawk ‘heavyweight smooth-siders’ soon, but Norfolk and Western cars?

Never seen 'em.

And I’m guessing that the J Class would regularly haul a sixteen/eighteen car consist - that will need at track like Dr Rivets to make the most of it…

Hereabouts, the only track I know that might not look totally occupied by such a train is the fine G1 layout at Ruddingdon, with its loooooong straights and sweeping bends.

The NW J Class normally would pull between 5-8 cars due to the grades. The Accucraft smoothsides will be a fine set behind the J!

Here is the one TRS painted for Accucraft:

N&WClass J

I’m corrected, but then, recalling that that part of the USA is pretty hilly, what with the Blue Ridge Mountains and so on…shoulda remembered that, me.

Beautiful paint job - no doubt it was the very one I drooled over at the show…

Trouble is, I’d have to sell a car to buy one, and it wouldn’t go around my curves…well, that’s MY excuse.

Best
