Not all caboose red paint is created equal

So i couldn’t find caboose red in floquil spray anymore. I ordered a can of scale coat 2 caboose red. now, i understand that different companies mix their paint a lil different but all the other caboose red paints i have had have at least been close to each other. Scale coat is on the left, Floquil is on the right…

They aren’t even close. I’m wondering if the can is mismarked? At any rate between the paint and shipping I have way too much $$ tied up in this failure.

I don’t know, I’ve never used Scale Coat 2 Caboose Red. But it sure looks like Red Oxide primer.
Looks like it would be a good color for boxcars. So maybe not a complete failure
Ralph

Almost looks like Tuscan Red…N&W Passenger car colors…

Terry,
Try Krylon Sun Dried Tomato

Bart wins the prize! I had some Tuscan red and it is a pretty close match.
Thanks Rooster i’ll get a can of that Tuesday after work.

Terry

I wonder if they maybe label the can wrong. Was suppose to be Tuscan Red. On the other hand the name is Scale Coat 2 Caboose Red. That 2 makes me wonder.

Scale coat 2 is the brand name. They also make scale coat which I believe is rc car paint.

Aparently rustoleum has a choke hold on the market around here. No krylon to be had!! I found something close called colonial red. I’ll post a color comparison.

Terry

You should be able to find Krylon in Walmart. Michaels also carries Krylon. It’s worth looking for.

Sun Dried tomato …oh and primer red with a gloss clear overspray was another thought. You could make that your mission tomorrow while recovering from today’s near miss on the saw Terry. Take a break from the saw and play with some spray paint tomorrow! Also get a can of safety red/yellow for them hoodie draw strings.

I stay outta wal mart as much as possible. I gave them a call, no sun dried tomato. Wont order it either.

True Value Hardware stores carry it. At least around here they do.

Being the depressed area that this is, we have very limited choices in stores and in those stores we have very limited choices. I’m headed out today with a color sample to find the closest match I can. I just can’t justify driving over an hour to find rattle cans.

Here’s the red i found the other day Colonial Red. Still to dark.

Yes ...that is where I get mine cause like Terry I avoid Walmart like the plague! Terry, I remembered that I used Sun Dried Tomato for my combination car kitbash. That color is on the trim ,the seats are a different color red and the Krylon primer red with a clear coat is pretty close to the Geep 38 pulling it(USA Lehigh Valley). Maybe this will give you a better idea of the colors before you buy them. Note the difference between the indoor pics and outside ones as well ...like on page 4 and 5 http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=15826&p=1

American red is the winner

I’m building a caboose so this thread was useful - especialy when Star Hobby was out of Floquil caboose red spray paint! I bought Testors ‘dark red’ but it was too light and bright. Home Depot didn’t have “sun-dried tomato” but they did have Rustoleum satin “heritage red” and I think it works.

Looks like that really is the color of Scale Coat caboose red. Take a look at the color chart (Caboose Red is 014). Maybe CB&Q Chinese Red would be a good Scale Coat match to the old Floquil caboose red.

Matt,
I on’t know if it’s my computer or what, but 014 looks like brown to me. I thught cabeese wee usually redder than boxcar brown?

You cant trust photo / monitor color charts. That chart will look different from monitor to monitor. Printing won’t help either as the same image printed on different printers will vary in color. The only valid charts are physical paint chips. We fight this every day in my business.
